in 1992, i lived in Austin, TX, and i attended the SXSW music festival (which wasn't the huge media spectable it is today). one evening i went to a small club to see a singer i liked, and Ani happened to be playing before her. from the moment she started attacking her acoustic guitar with industrial-strength fake fingernails duct-taped onto her fingers, i was fascinated. at the time, Not So Soft (her second album) was her most recent release, and her first on CD, and i remained a fan of her music up through To The Teeth. after that she went in musical directions that didn't resonate with me, but i still love her early work.
