Overall: 10

Top Tracks: "So Cruel", "The Fly", "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)"

Amazing album, U2's best. A beautiful combination of heart-wrenching personal drama and flippant embraces of ironic 90s culture. Ultra Violet is U2's best song, in my opinion. Manages to balance between something deeply beautiful and incredibly facetious. Masterpiece.

Outstanding album, if lacking in cohesion. I tend to listen to these songs individually. As with most U2 material, live is better. Try, for example: Mysterious Ways & One (Rose Bowl), The Fly (U22), and Zoo Station (Chicago). The The Fly guitar solo is one of my all time favorites.

Song average: ~90
Highlights: Zoo Station (95), One (95), The Fly (100) and Mysterious Ways (95). Zoo Station is especially underrated on this site—as is The Fly.
Lowlights: Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (80) and So Cruel (80)

Their last great work. The songwriting is outstanding, and the band is at its creative and innovative best. A classic.

This is a much more European sounding album than The Joshua Tree, and it's all the better for it. Their best album IMO. 90s U2 was pretty good, right?

O álbum que elevou a banda para a maior banda de rock de sua geração, talvez a grande ultima banda de rock!

Now that I have eventually got around to buying this album, I must admit that track for track I put this above The Joshua Tree which was my favourite U2 album. This album has more edge (I don't mean guitarist), it has a rawness which rocks!

There are some interesting things here and there, but they are small things. Like the “aaaaahhhh” in the background of “Even Better Than the Real Thing”. “One” gets me a bit emotional if I try really hard. I dunno, it’s just... you can hear that Bono takes himself so serious that it’s hard to hear some genuine vulnerability in his music.

Love the album and really rate all the tracks. Wild Horses is my favourite.
Liked emptysquares comment about Bono - that got me laughing. I didn't set out to like U2 as there are many things that annoy me about them, but I'm afraid I just can't hate them as nearly everything I've heard of them I really like. Guess it's a bit like Coldplay. They seem to draw a certain level of dislike from many fronts - is that because they are so big and successful or they come across smug? Not sure. But if I like the music I'll keep listening to it.

There are some fantastic tracks crowded around tracks that I find painfully bland.

For some reason, after many many listens I still cannot stand One, Wild Horses, or Trying to throw your arms around the world: to me these songs bring down a fantastic album quite a lot.

For the 1992 tour for this album, Bono adopted as his persona "The Fly", a leather-clad egomaniac meant to parody rock stardom. Following the completion of the tour he reverted to his normal persona of egotistical rock star who likes leather.
