Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.5/100, a mean average of 76.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.6.

I first heard about Lord Huron because they were to open for Joseph Arthur at eTown Hall in Boulder, Colorado, a show I went to see with my then-girlfriend. In anticipation of the show, I downloaded some Lord Huron tracks to get some familiarity with them ahead of the show. I liked their sound; it was a little derivative, but also very much in line with the Bon Iver and Gregory Alan Isakov school of indie folk that represented the bulk of my music listening at the time. For some reason my girlfriend had a vsicerally negative reaction to Lord Huron at the time. I've never been sure what that was about: it seemed to have something to do with their name, or maybe the lack of originality in their sound. In any case, she's since come around on them, and I've since come to regard frontman Ben Schneider as one of the best songwriters out there. "Ends of the Earth" even made it into the terrible film adaptation of Bill Bryson's Appalachian Trail book A Walk in the Woods; in fact, I'd call it the high point of the movie, as it plays over the end credits.

open desert, clear night sky, with your love
