Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Pro - Nicely avoids the obvious choices that usually show up in most 80's charts.
Con - Far too dependent on anti-pop/avant-garde music. I like some of that stuff too, but it would have shown refreshing diversity & levity to see some mainstream pop, rock, or soul mixed in there (beyond the 4 Prince albums).
Interesting and very person chart. Enjoyed checking it out
I loved looking over your chart ~ so very different from my own tastes (we only have 3 albums in common). That is the beauty of music and how we connect to it. I appreciate/respect your selections and will check out a few albums/artists that I've missed along my own musical journey.
