Top 100 Music Albums of 2014 by 19loveless91 (2016)
Album count so far: 131 albums + I guess a couple of EPs (also Cilvia Demo which is apparently officially an EP).
Well, it's been an interesting year. Don't really know if it was good or bad, or if my attempts to achieve personal growth were at least a minor success (I guess time will tell about that), but in the process I actually did a lot of things and a lot has happened to me. And it's the first time in years I can say that with full honesty. Concerning music, too, it hasn't at all been boring. While I'm nowhere near on the level of some fellow users, I'm quite happy with the amount of music i had listened to and the number of live shows I have seen.
I made a post on tumblr bragging about those, if you wish to see it:
Mulatu Astatke, Ought, Mac DeMarco, St. Vincent, Portishead, Warpaint, Janelle Monae, Cut Copy (!!), Swans, Xiu Xiu were some of my favourite live acts...
Regarding the quality of this years releases, I think that there are easily 35-40 albums here that I'll be returning to, + select songs from many others. However I can't say I'm completely happy looking at the top albums, at least when comparing them to previous years. There just hasn't been anything this year that would completely blow me away, or that I would feel was an instant classic of our era, sort of like Good Kid m.A.A.d. City in 2012, or Modern Vampires (or Holter's album) last year. Still a couple of albums that came close (one of them only being released after all the music publications already released their end of year lists).
I decided to just fill out the entire 100 spots, but that means that I'm not quite as enthusiastic about the albums towards the end of the list, + it has to be noted that the order gets a bit random in the second half - while I decided not to include albums I only listened to once (meaning there are still some potential entries - e.g. Azealia Banks' album, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Max Graef etc.), there are still many that I don't remember well enough.
Tara Jane O'Neal - Elemental Finding
La Dispute - Woman in Mirror
Ratking - Snow Beach
Spoon - Inside Out
Flying Lotus feat. Kendrick Lamar - Never Catch Me
Feeling Alright or any other off Warpaint's album
Shabazz Palaces - Forerunner Foray
Ought – Habit
Francis Harris - You Can Always Leave
Swans - A little god in my hands
Future Islands - Seasons (Waiting on You)
tune-yards – Wait for a Minute
Perfect Pussy – Interference Fits
(each album note includes my track pick for the album too. Check those out too)
*TOP EPs of the year:*
Nothing to see here yet. I did really enjoy Mr. Noah (Panda Bear) and Frostbite (Kitty) though.
*TOP VIDEOS of the year:*
So far I loved the videos for:
-Never Catch Me and Tiny Tortures by Flying Lotus
-Mess On A Mission by Liars
-Down On My Luck by Vic Mensa
aaaand I really need to see more...

It doesn't seem like a very special album at first glance, but it just sucked me in. There is this sound, taking the best of trip hop and the likes of Portishead (Beth seems to be an influence even on the vocal delivery), it is subdued yet intricate, hypnotic, atmospheric.
There is the songwriting - none of the songs here stay the same throughout their length, they evolve, each containing a hundred little surprises, each progressing from point A to point B, slowly but surely reaching their climaxes...
I did not expect this to remain at my #1 spot when I listened to it back in January, but there you go... Having given it a few more listens recently, and keeping in mind how obsessed I was with it for a while, I can say that there simply hasn't been another album this year that would do the same for me.
also Go In, Biggy [First added to this chart: 01/23/2014]
Few things are as beautiful as that slow build up to a climax (of sorts) in third minute of Elemental Finding or the ending of New Lights For a Sky.
-Elemental Finding- [First added to this chart: 03/08/2014]
So glad this dropped at the end of the year. Not just because it's a slap in the face of all those publications, that have all released their lists prematurely, but also because this year has been missing something that would capture the zeitgeist. Something like I felt the Vampire Weekend's album last year did. Not that I would call this a political album, but time of its release is just perfect.
Musically, too, there's just so much going on, everything is so smooth yet so layered, and I think it's these layers that make this something that i find genuinely better than its influences. And better than his previous albums.
-Back to the Future- [First added to this chart: 12/28/2014]
Eery, moody, serene, relaxing. Catchy, too.
-You Can Always Leave- [First added to this chart: 10/30/2014]
More joyful nihilism by the pair.
-Dan and Time, Reunited By Fate- [First added to this chart: 02/16/2014]
or Made of Air. [First added to this chart: 12/18/2014]
-Pattern Walks- => does a cool You Made Me Realise imitation. [First added to this chart: 03/21/2014]
They listened to some Talking Heads, Television, Wire, Velvet Underground. And turned it into something of their own...
-Habit- [First added to this chart: 05/25/2014]
-Snow Beach- [First added to this chart: 05/01/2014]
Going through motions. just... driving. [First added to this chart: 07/01/2014]

I really miss the self-reflecting (and exact listen counting) chart introductions and detailed imagery in the album notes of your earlier year charts. Also where's your 2019, ti nor bedak
In addition to this chart containing lots of entries I also like a lot (Enter the Slasher House and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music being two notable examples), I also really appreciate the comments accompanying the selections. It's pretty evident, both from the comment and from its generous ranking here, that I need to check out Warpaint's self-titled album.
Warpaint has actually been my "most listened/sung album while showering" (for showering only), hence the top 10 :)
A very solid end of year list, and while we have a bit in common there is plenty of divide for interesting perspective. There’s a bit I haven’t listened to and I’ll definitely be using this as a source for my own repeat listens.
