Top 100 Music Albums of 2014

Alright, I've finally listened to enough to make a chart. That said, I'm still not well versed in 2014. Still haven't finished several of our top albums, even. This will continue to change and evolve, but here's how things stack up right now. ALL albums I've listened to in 2014 will be on here unless I go over 100 albums, whether the albums are good or bad. I'd say right now the line of good/meh can be drawn at Post Tropical (as in its the last good album before meh), and the line of meh/bad can be drawn at Transgender Dysphoria Blues (as in last meh album before bad).

Really, this wasn't on the site before?
So this is the single best math rock album ever created, and I mean that. I really do. There's something special about making happy emo music, something only a few bands can do well, and that no one has come close to doing as well as this album. The riffs are impressive, the lyrics are obscurely catchy and resonant, and the overall flow of the album is immaculate. This will be going on my overall when I re-do my overall this winter break (yes, there is an actual date for that now).

Right, I was going through our "worst" (really just our most unknown) albums of the year, just cuz I was curious. Picked out a bunch with cool covers, this being one of them. Threw it on. This is the genre I've been waiting as long as I can remember to find. This is true synthpunk. This takes every element I love about New Wave and synthpop and puts that heavy bass, that raging guitar, that anger into it. I love Post-Punk to death because it's as close as it comes, but this is incredible. Is it spot on? No, there's some flaws, lyrically it could be better, drumming could use a lot. But I mean even lyrically, it manages to have some just poppiness (see "Boyfriend") and some songs about an unfortunate but overwhelming want to partake in rape-play or extreme BDSM with a friend until they're bleeding (see "Blood Drips"). This is going on my overall chart, this is one of my favorite albums I've ever heard in my life.

I feel like if I was never allowed to hear music from the UK again, I might actually be sadder to lose Scottish music than British. Maybe. Whatever the case, this is very Scottish, and pretty good. Not completely blow you away good, necessarily, but very good and catches your ear.
Re-Review: This is actually my 4th most listened album of the year, and only isn't higher because I don't have the CD. I've come to really love it, it's like a post-punk Frightened Rabbit, and I mean good FR, not their ... mm ... not so good stuff.
This gets a little more special every listen. They do as a whole, I'd only ever heard their live album before and mostly just went "eh" but they're REALLY growing on me. [First added to this chart: 11/11/2014]

I was so excited to see this album appear on Spotify finally, and plugged in, expecting a Half-Mute/Desire/Pinheads on the Moon sound. Nothing like that. You know how it's really hard to describe what Talk Talk's sound is, so people say it's post-rock influenced by new wave and jazz? This to me is post-rock influenced by new wave and jazz. It's entirely instrumental, and gives you the instant feeling of being out homeless in a cold night in a big city. One of the best soundtracks ever made, for certain, and not even an official soundtrack, unfortunately.

So y'all know I love Finish Ticket, Dave?, Two Door Cinema Club, and a handful of other indie pop rock. This. This is up there with the best. Debut release from some kids in Minnesota matches some of my favorite albums ever in this genre. Check it out ASAP. Seriously.
PS It was produced by Alan Sparhawk of Low. So you know. If you need another reason ... [First added to this chart: 11/23/2014]

Things this album achieves:
A good song featuring Yoko Ono
A top 10 song of all time for me
Vocals as impressive as Matt Berninger's if not better
My favorite pop hit of this summer
Said pop hit being intellectual
Discussion of suicide and serious issues
Dancability
More than a few tracks that are almost tear worthy
And 5 (I counted) times I went to go find a lyric because it was so damn beautiful
This is going to rise on this chart, and on my overall chart. This is absolutely incredible. [First added to this chart: 08/04/2014]

Is it wrong to have 2 of the same album (essentially at least) in your top 10? Probably. Almost certainly. However, Cope is a very real album of the year contender for me most years, I just feel this has been a stronger year in music. And Hope is better. Hope is actually better than Cope. Not by much, mind you, but it's a definite preference.
This album feels so much like something I'd've loved in middle school. 8th grade for me was acoustic covers of songs, Monarchy, Bon Iver, and a few nevershoutnever tracks. And yet, like Bon Iver and Monarchy, this feels oddly mature while also nostalgic even though it's obviously a new album. Bizarrely brilliant. Magnificent. [First added to this chart: 10/02/2014]

The grimiest, dirtiest thing I've heard in a long while. My band teacher was once trying to describe what a song should sound like as a "moldy drum on a slave ship", and I had no idea what they meant. This album is that moldy drum, and it's brilliant. Confident, unashamed, just all out. Beautiful. And not even explosively out there, there's a dirtiness to it, really, it's like chewing mud or ... I don't even know. It's wonderful and impossible to describe and thanks defago.

One of my top 5 post rock albums ever, for sure. Really interesting, sort of post-metalcore, the drums are a bit more than your usual post-rock, and even some of the guitar goes a bit shreddier. Very, very unique, really just incredible.

Why couldn't I have found these guys earlier? Incredible folk, and more than anything, let's talk about Monica Martin for a second. This woman has one of the best voices I've ever heard, male or female, folk or otherwise. Like easily a top 5 singer I've ever seen. The whole band's cool (how many bands actually accept a drunk request for 2 Chainz and joke around with it on stage), but she's just incredible. Also gorgeous and seems to be a great person in general. Let me reiterate that the whole band is cool though, they're both the kind of people I'd happily shell out $25 to go see perform and the kind I'd happily hang out with as people. They put on a great concert, too.

Outstanding 2014 chart! I think anyone willing to finish a top 100 year chart and provide detailed comments deserves major props. Some favorites of mine on here include the wonderful Lost in the Dream, After the Disco, This Is All Yours, and Post Tropical. Great work!

Great start. I need to spend more time wiht that s. Carey album. You should check out Hot Dreams by Timber Timbre and Past Life by Lost in the Trees. I could see you loving them both.
