The elusive Shinichi Atobegave us a record back in 2001 on Basic Channel’s Chain Reaction imprint and then disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a solitary 12” that’s been selling for crazy money. The he's back - and what a return!! Demdike Stare's label tracked him down and give us this stunning album - from an opener that sounds like an Actress track to our favourite track - a heady 9 minute-long piano house track that sounds like Dj Sprinkles before the album heads down the expected Vainquer / Basic Channel route with subtle singatures and a timeless feel that means this has already become a Phonica favourite. Pity the vinyl has all gone (and no repress apparently!)

Another one of those 'Is it an album / is it a single' dilemma situations. Worked as an album for us, so here it is proudly occupying no. 2 in our list. Got repeated plays on the shop soundsystem and his set at our compilation launch was amazing. A no brainer.

The most memorable and oddly cohesive album of Stott’s career to date, built and rendered in the spirit of those rare albums that straddle innovation and tradition through darkness and light. The title track hits the spot.

From a word-of-mouth secret to global obsession in the space of one year (and a bit). LP1 features none of these previously released songs; instead each track on LP1 is brand new, born out of FKA twigs’ artistic philosophy of spontaneous creation and collaboration in the studio. Its been hard to ignore FKA Twigs this year from her sell-out gigs to her stunning artwork and videos.

Cracked, disjointed, rattling techno from the mysterious producer that's causes ripples of excitement any time he surfaces. Responsible for coaxing I-F's Murder Capital label back into action after years of inactivity - quality over quantity guaranteed.

The return of the Twin!! First album since 2001's 'Druqs' from the enigmatic Richard D James and it's a beast - especially the triple gatefold LP version. Ignore the hype - this is a great return from the Cornish wizard!

In the mystical cycles of the sonic universe, every so often Manchester conjures up, seemingly from nowhere, an absolutely mind blowing LP; up there with anyone else the world over. One of those rare producers can produce hip hop, house and soul grooves - all contained within this one slab of vinyl!

D’Angelo had this to say about the concept behind Black Messiah: "‘Black Messiah’ is a hell of a name for an album. It can be easily misunderstood. Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I’m calling myself a Black Messiah."

Happiness Is Happening is like a concept album without a concept. A testament to the fact that the concept of an album that works within the realms and boundaries of “electronic (dance) music” can be so much more than a loose collection of 12- inches or just an exercise in style.
