Top 100 Music Albums of 2017

In 2017 I committed to my first year of making an end of year top 100 list, and consequently tried to listen to as much music as possible. Since then, I've changed the original decision to reflect a few things, my less radical desire to promote more esoteric choices, hating on popular things for no reason, and some things have lasted more than others. Here's my original note (or part of it):
"I thought I'd actually do one this year, and it's been quite a fulfilling experience sort of putting my head down and listening to music a little bit more critically than usual. That's not to say I didn't listen to these albums for pleasure either though. 2017 produced some very moving albums, ones that - in cases - do not allow for a critical ear at all. Anyway, this is what I bring to the table."

Finding this album was such a shock to my system because I'd sort of become resigned to the fact that the year had spawned no works of mastery. I was oh so wrong, this album is something very special. John Maus has been going at it for some years now and his work - at least as it looks to me - has been building to this album. In Screen Memories, Maus takes a lot of the playfulness of his 2000s albums and ties it in with the experimental and avant-garde synth work he explored in his 2011 album "We Must....". This, I think at least, is a stark contrast to the quintessential releases of 2017, a year marked by works that are simply just not the best an artist has put out, and in cases are great disappointments by otherwise great artists (some prominent examples being Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, or Kendrick Lamar).
For Maus, however, not only has he come out with a phenomenal album, he's come out with his opus.

I found myself, being a literature student, connecting with this album quite profoundly as I have never experienced name dropping that strikes me as personally as Milo's does here - from Jean Genet to Kandinsky, Milo references the literary and artistic heroes in beautiful rap-poetics.

Lynch made a masterpiece in the new Twin Peaks, Lynch and Dean Hurley's drones created so much tension but it was undoubtedly Badalamenti's compositions that gave the show its perfect nostalgic feel. I'm so happy this actually happened.

Great top 10! At least from what I've heard so far from it, I can say that they all grabbed my attention in one way or another. Three Harps, Tuning Forks & Electronics was probably the biggest surprise. I found that one really grew on me over time. :)
