A work of sheer magnitude. Cadu Tenorio intersperses ambience and loops with eerily indifferent text-to-voice monologues, creating this immersion / alienation listening sequence that spirals into a feedback loop. The music gradually builds on it's own motifs in ever more hauntingly repetitious loops, and the text-to-voice in parallel eventually reaches a near mantric point. It feels both transportive and static, both expansively vast and minutely dense - it explodes and implodes at once.
It's a music that on one level is truly its own: Tenorio questions how a listening experience of ambient music ought to be; it sounds like nothing else. However, it's also strangely appropriate. Corrupted Data positions itself in a way that speaks to some strange sense of profundity without making sense at all. At a time where there is so much with which to say some something about, and nothing of much muchness being said - or where we hear an overwhelming noise of speech, and it amounts to radio silence - an artwork that says a whole load of nothing about nothing is all the more impactful.
AOTY.

Been waiting to see what Sophie came out with since hearing the Vroom Vroom EP and thinking: huh, this can sound good? In Oil of Every Pearl's Un Insides Sophie takes pop to its very extremity, and finds in that a space to explore the ways music can facilitate experience. Voice manipulation and natural vs synthetic sounds make for a tremendous expression of her transition.
I nearly bought a ticket to the FOMO festival in Melbourne to see her despite REALLY not wanting to see any other artists, or be seen among the other people that'd be there - if that says enough.

The courage to put out an album like Twin Fantasy is in itself moving. It always sat as a personal favourite of mine, but one I never put on a list because a) I couldn't bring myself to, and b) I'd convinced myself it wasn't good enough, as if the despair of listening to it was the only value I derived from it; I think it's mostly internalised self-hate that's led me to largely undercut the record. In fact I hadn't listened to the album in years when I heard it was going to be re-worked. Something I was both excited about and terrified of. The album was already canonical, what might be if this rework changes the experience for the worse? would it kill my memory of it? That said, I was deep down excited because I've found myself listening to newer Car Seat Headrest albums and loving the production. I'd been waiting for an album to come out that had the power and profundity of Twin Fantasy but the production chops of later works, like deep down I'd convinced myself if I could take the album (or whatever post-Teens of Denial masterpiece I thought was coming) seriously, and still be moved as I was a teenager to bandcamp Toledo, then I could happily herald the work a masterpiece, and deservingly so. I think deep down I was waiting for this to happen, and I couldn't be happier it did.

I adore Julia. There's a magnitude in this album that really surpasses anything she has done before, and though I may find myself still preferring Loud City Song, this is a unique experience in and of itself. I Shall Love is mesmerising.
I won't be able to see her live as she's playing Melbourne the night of my mum's birthday. I don't know why I'm sharing that here, but it's an anecdote worthy of having a tragic elizabethan drama written about it. I want to try and not complain though since I get to listen to this work now.

A truly unique and transportive album. We seem to be getting a sweet return of some Pavement era artists: Malkmus' new album, and now this album having been produced by David Berman; we're also to expect another Jews' record from Berman - or the closest approximation to one - as Bob Nastanovich has revealed.
In any case, the output is nothing like that of the 90s. Malkmus had his crack with auto-tune, but the product is ultimately just good. Universalists, however, is the most mesmering example of old and new wedged together and obliterated - of production that accommodates the multiplicity of style and form that Gat offers up. The album creates sounds that are at once familiar and excitingly new, meditative and chaotic.
This is not to take away the prestige in this record from Gat. It is his record and he is centre stage. Also, Fading Casinos is basically what the Arctic Monkey's new album wishes it could be.

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.7/100, a mean average of 92.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 5.4.

Great to see the fabulous Goat Girl in your chart. Not enough love around for this brilliant band IMO
Well, just took a very interesting tour around the world via your chart. So good to have a chart that recognises the quality music across the globe beyond the US/UK bubble. We only have 3 albums in common (make that 4 after I add 'Current Joys' - thanks to your chart) and we clearly walk to different beats & resonance ~ but that is something to be embraced on BEA.
Good chart
good year
Thanks so much for that beautiful write up for Twin Fantasy, it's given me some extra insight into an album I already adore

A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
