Also love Sneaky Feelings (reminds me of a close friend), and Less than Zero. Meanwhile Alison and Watching the Detectives are among my favourite Costello songs period, the latter boasting some of the most dizzying lyrics ever written. This album has seemed so dumb for me to me for so long. Dry, repetitive, bland, you name a criticism that has been stated below and I have had that opinion. But after just coming back to it again and again periodically, it finaly clicked, as all good albums do. There is something really seductive in the layered guitars and strangely static songwriting. The songs don't really go anywhere at all, and it can be hard to understand why at first. But I eventually realized that this album is just the musical distillation of small town life. The cover, the backstory, etc all point toward it, but even structure wise, it feels meandering and aimless, waiting for something to happen. But nothing ever does, and things are always the same, and yet you can't help but love your little nondescript cornfield town. I don't think it's a coincidence that Talk Talk's later works and this album have both made their genius apparent to me around the same time. Though they are different in many ways, they both have a kind of featurelessness to them, as described a but above. They are unstructured and meandering, and if you are not listening attentively, it feels like the same thing over and over. But just as there is beauty in the use of silence by Talk Talk, there is beauty in the use of repetition by American Football. 80/100"  [+]  Reply

"One could argue that this is A Tribe's best record. I'd still put The Low End Theory first but this is undoubtedly a powerful, emotional, and worthy final outing from one of the greatest rap groups of all time. Both works can be described with the word "epic", they're lengthy, full of interesting ideas, exhilarating, techincally very impressive, and even the theme is somewhat similiar with constant nostalgic "looking back", to the time of...""OK so why do I feel this is a "music equivalent of Tree of Life". Both works can be described with the word "epic", they're lengthy, full of interesting ideas, exhilarating, techincally very impressive, and even the theme is somewhat similiar with constant nostalgic "looking back", to the time of childhood. I also think they share the same problem - often I get the feeling that they're epic just for the sake of being epic. Not that this is a bad thing, but I did feel sometimes, that it was just... empty, when it presented itself to be something more than that. I had more problem with that in the movie than on the album though. I guess if the movie is visually impressive, it can still easily make me unsatisfied if I feel that the images on screen don't make much sense or if I feel the author thinks the movie is smarter than it actually is. On the album, there are several interludes, that are impressive by themselves, but don't really offer anything in the terms of an album, not musically nor thematically. Some will find them to be a filler, but to me they're impressive and quality enough so I don't lose interest. In Tree of Life, there are also certain "interludes" that in general probably had some place in director's story (his whole "vision"), but I ultimately found a lot of that to be fairly boring (despite being fascinating to watch) and quite simply - empty. So.. Being just a music album (also, without the annoying voice overs of the movie) Hurry Up, We're Dreaming doesn't make me feel that way at all, even if I have my doubts about it. Some of the songs are just so good that I don't care if Gonzalez made them with true emotions, honesty, or just in order to make them as big and "epic" as possible. Track picks: Midnight City, Wait, Claudia Lewis, Raconte Moi Une Historie (something out of the ordinary, can only be a good thing on an album like this), ..."  [+]  Reply

At first you may not totally feel the groove but it's hinted at, then the next time through you hear the groove and the unique flavor of all the songs, then later through it you hear more and more intricate little fillips and details and nuances. Yes, it's good. It's inventive, creative and just... very very percussive. There is a feel of all the sounds being created w/ kitchenware utensils and pots and pans. This is proof that there's more innovation possible when creating great percussion than just adjusting how you EQ the kick and snare. To my ears it's not so jarring and esoteric as everyone is making it out to be. In fact I find it more accessible than her other albums. I've been unable to get into her too much because of her voice doing the half talking half rapping thing, but here it's so tightly coupled w/ the percussion and the rest of the song that it fits much better whether she is singing or talking. In fact she'll get done w/ a melody before I realize "oh hey she went from talking to singing and I didn't notice" I can tell it's a very personal album for her and a pent up anger over some political and socioeconomic issues she's very opinionated about. I hear some Beyonce and Solange in the vocals and most prominently the lyrics w.r.t. the identity politics of it all. I'm not necessarily entirely ideologically aligned but I can appreciate she executed on her goals as an artistic statement. Probably could have been 10 songs as the triplet triplet boom boom gets a little exhausting by the end but overall yeah pretty great record."  [+]  Reply
