My favourite albums by Slovenian artists, pre- or post-independence (1991).

1 album per artist to cover more ground. 72 is a random number, I kept going as long as I could still say I "liked" the album.

I wrote comments for each album. The added extra links ("footnotes") are not necessarily related to the artist. Comments get shorter later on.

Some genres under (or not at all-) represented. I clearly also don't know enough about the many electronic or metal subgenres.

If you're looking for "traditional slovenian folk music", there isn't much of that here. In general, a lot of stuff here is probably hard to enjoy without understanding the lyrics, so this is hardly a "list of recommendations".

Growing up, Adi Smolar was mostly known (apart from his tall, lanky, hairy look (1)) for his less than serious tracks, even songs for children at times. But he could also write a more introspective or melancholic tune. This album is a bit hard to find anywhere, originally released on a cassette after him performing but not releasing anything for a better part of a decade, it was then rerecorded and rereleased. But it has a bit of everything from his repertoire. My favourite is Iskra, čas in mraz (Iskra, time, and cold - referring to what are nowadays the NLB bank buildings in Ljubljana's center and the display on top, showing time and temperature), Brez besed is also beautiful. And from the joke tracks either Kompleksomanija (a bit about how ugly him and his friends are) or V Slogi pa vrtijo... (about parents terrified about adult films being played at the former Sloga cinema) are good fun.

Adi had been pretty prolific during the 90s, some of his work being recorded with the help of the band Leteči potepuhi (mostly known for a song called Bicikl (2), which is a series of over the top sex jokes). He's also been most known for songs like that, although at least his second album Neprilagojen is also a mix of lyrical styles. In particular the last track on that album, Daleč je za naju pomlad is a ballad from perspective of an old couple about love, aging and mortality, that hits pretty deep. It's really an epitome for most of his opus. He's not a particularly brilliant or complex lyricist, but I think he understands what people are feeling or thinking about when going through their daily lives.
