At the beginning of Rodney Crowell’s career, he released a trio of albums for Warner Bros. Despite being an up and coming songwriter, his own recordings were not yet catching on, and sales were low. He recorded a fourth album in 1984 for the label, which they rejected. Crowell then negotiated his way out of his deal with Warners and signed with Columbia. In 1988, he released his breakthrough hit album Diamonds & Dirt, which prompted Warner Bros. to put out The Rodney Crowell Collection a year later. Consisting of songs from the first three albums (plus one from the rejected album), this was clearly the label making an effort to cash in on Crowell’s recent success. Did it work? Well, it remains the best selling of the nine Crowell compilation albums. And even though the material is lesser known and nearly a decade old, it’s a great look at his earliest albums, which did not sell a lot when they were initially released.
And there are some important tracks here. “Shame On The Moon” was not a hit for Crowell in 1981, but it sure was for Bob Seger in 1982. “I Don’t Have To Crawl” (from the unreleased fourth album) was originally released by Emmylou Harris. And the excellent “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight”, a hit for both Harris and The Oak Ridge Boys, is one of Crowell’s all-time best songs. Did Warner Bros. drop the ball by letting Crowell walk? I would say so. His career continues to this day, and while the hits don’t come the way they used to, he remains a highly respected songwriter and well loved performer. Those first three albums can be a bit hard to track down, so The Rodney Crowell Collection is a good way to get the highlights from his first years. An interesting and important document from one of the very best. [First added to this chart: 04/22/2025]
