Produced by Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty & Mike Campbell. Tom Petty gets written off by a lot of people for being overly simple and one dimensional. But, as he shows on his first solo album, first impressions can be deceiving. Petty's material is not as simple as it sounds...and even if it were, there's nothing wrong with something that sounds as great as this. Jeff Lynne shows why he's one of the best producers in the business, and the songs are all excellent, even if they do sound simple at first listen.

Yep. This is, indeed Sean Penn's little brother. And yes, the magic dust that seemed to bless the Penn children did not skip Michael. March is a strong debut album that came from nowhere to give us one of the more pleasant hit singles of 1989, the jangly acoustic "No Myth". What if I WAS Romeo in black jeans? But this wasn't just a one hit and a bunch of filler. March is actually a really good record.
The first 4 tracks are as strong a beginning of an album as you'll find. Catchy, melodic, and not a speck of cheese anywhere near it. "Brave New World" might be the catchiest song of the 80's that isn't buried in aquanet or new wave. And "Half Harvest", "This & That", and the awesome "Cupid's Got A Brand New Gun" are all just as good. (The last one, "Cupid", was actually partially recorded for my album...I almost covered it.)
March is not perfect...but it is really good. Definitely worth more than a spin, because this one does grow on you. [First added to this chart: 04/13/2012]

Produced by Jim Rondinelli, Tom Herbers & The Jayhawks. After their debut album, The Jayhawks found themselves without a label and without Gary Louris. They recorded this batch of demos (Louris came back to help) to get a label deal, and it ended up being released. The result is Blue Earth, a collection of raw recordings of some really great songs. It got them compared to Gram Parsons, and rightfully so. Unsung, and totally great in an almost unfinished kind of way.

Key Lime Pie was Camper Van Beethoven’s final album before breaking up in 1990. It’s also their most successful, and the one with the least amount of world music influence. Maybe because the band, always known for their sense of humor, finally sound like they aren’t taking themselves too seriously. The centerpiece is the great cover of Status Quo’s “Pictures Of Matchstick Men”, with the signature guitar line played on violin. “When I Win The Lottery”, “Sweethearts”, and “Jack Ruby” are also excellent high points.
The band broke up after Key Lime Pie, with singer David Lowery forming Cracker. They have since reunited, with 2 albums out since 1999 and a third on the way in 2012.
