Pre-teen. Opening track on a mix tape of electro-80s pop made by my older brother. Alien sounds to an 11 year old’s ears. I doubt I’d listen to any of it today, but it was the first time I became aware that music was more than what my violin teacher made me play.

13-15 years old. AC/DC was always “my” band and Iron Maiden was always “my brother’s”, and because of that, I would have to pick this over Live After Death. Both aural and emotional releases to a new-teen.

16-18 years old. This album bridged the Thrash and Death Metal periods. I read the review in Kerrang! and bought the album off the back of that. Nothing prepared me for vocals like this and it opened a new world to Obituary, Deicide, Napalm Death…

19 years old. My dad had left on my bed three albums: this, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. “I may not like the music you listen to, but I can tell they’re good guitarists. The blues is where it began.” And so also began my love-affair with everything the blues for decades to come.

20-24 years old. The blues led to 60s & 70s rock. As a student, buying albums was a luxury and this collection gave me everything from rockers to ballads to country and blues. All there.

25-28 years old. Some random jazz album borrowed from the local library started me on the jazz road. And a long road it’s been. This phase was hard bop, from mid 50s to mid 60s.

29-36 years old. From hard bop came free jazz of the 60s and on into the 90s and 00s. David S Ware, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor…too many to choose from, yet William Parker as been ever-present for me.

37 years old. Somewhere along the decade and a half of no-vocal music, I discovered classical, both western (Shostakovich, Webern, Bartok) and Indian (Vilayat Khan, L. Subramaniam).

38 years old. Evan Parker’s atonal and experimental-side within the jazz world brought me back to 90s IDM and then to anything electronic. Quantised beats and repetitive sheets. All the while, Autechre take the crown.

39-41 years old. This phase was everything from psychedelic (Acid Mothers Temple) to noise rock (Magik Markers) to doom (Indian). It made me want to play guitar again. Loudly.
