Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 84.5/100, a mean average of 83.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

While I agree with many on this site that you are best exploring an artist’s original releases rather than live or studio complications, I find Neil Young to be the exception. If I had to recommend two Neil Young albums for a newb, I’d suggest Decade and Live Rust. Neil’s catalog is extremely deep across a number of bands and genres. If you only pick up After the Gold Rush and Harvest or Rust Never Sleeps and Tonight’s the Night, you aren’t even getting a taste of Old Neil. Decade presents a diverse selection of some of the best rock n roll songs ever written. You can see the evolution of Neil Young as you listen through this album starting with his work in Buffalo Springfield on to this solo stuff along with Crazy Horse and CSNY selections mixed in. Front to back, this is the best Neil Young album and a staple for any classic rock fan.

A lot of good music on this album, and for someone who does not want to buy his albums for this period this would ideal. This period is his best music, so go ahead and enjoy.

The best Neil Young compilation as it features his essential years and doesn't stray into the wobbly eighties. Including Buffalo Springfield as well as solo tracks it features all the songs you would expect(although the choices from, On the beach, are arguably the weakest songs on the album, and a pity there's none from, Time fades away, either) and a handful of unreleased tracks too. If you're after a Neil Young compilation, this is the one to get. Oh yeah, and as for Jackbrown moaning about compilations again, there are songs on here you can't get anywhere else, even if you buy all the 'proper' studio albums.

the greatest compilation, not a huge compilation fan really the only reason this is not my neil young representation in my 100 greatest albums (everybody knows this is nowhere is my vote). it is amazing and as good a collection of songs as exists.

I'm not a serious Neil Young fan (if at all if in the truest sense)... but I like this "best of" collection. He's a great songwriter, but just not a fan of his albums.

Apparently this was one of the first big collector's editions/box sets released. Critics didn't like it because they believed it put the artist too high on a pedestal.

Years later, this is still an incredible introspective on Young's early career. Contains most of his essential and experimental tunes from his first ten years in the recording studio. A good start for someone completely new to Neil Young.

I'm not sure I could pick a favorite Neil Young album, but many of my favorites are on this album.
