I was lucky enough to see this album tour on the 20th May 1989 at the Cornwall Coliseum. From memory a hot day was spent on the beach followed up by a very special concert at a very special venue which is sadly no more. I still have the concert programme which sits happily with my vinyl. When I lay the needle onto the first track it always takes me back to that very special evening. A great compilation album, I love all the tracks. A good mixture of atmosphere and rock. 'In a Lifetime' is a personal favourite given that I love U2's eighties albums.[First added to this chart: 04/01/2021]
Superb production quality as with all Ozric Tentacles work. I absolutely love the drums/percussion, synth textures and flute splashes on Phalarn Dawn, it is a slower track and full of mystique! There is plenty to enjoy as with most of the earlier Ozric's albums.[First added to this chart: 08/21/2020]
This is an often overlooked (I did) album and is underrated, delivering a number of really great songs. This is Your Land and Belfast Child are particular favourites of mine. I am really pleased that I have been able to pick this up on vinyl re-issue, now completing what I believe to be my collection of the classic Simple Minds albums heyday on vinyl.[First added to this chart: 04/23/2022]
This is listed on Wikipedia as 'Progressive, Tribal, Electronica'. With those three words together in one sentence, it is no surprise that I like this album and have done so for over twenty five years. It is only coming across David Van Tieghem on this site that made me dig out my old tape (yes tape) which sounds even better on the audio system I have now than it ever did in my car or on a Walkman! I have added this album to the site because I feel that it is quite 'progressive' in a more modern electronica way and yes I suppose there are some tribal percussive elements. A great album which still sounds fairly fresh today, well to me anyway![First added to this chart: 01/11/2024]
I used to own this on tape until some little shite burgled my car in a Yorkshire hotel car park many many years ago! I was so happy to come across an excellent condition vinyl in my local vinyl store recently. Brought back many happy memories (prior to losing my entire tape collection in one night!). For those of you who remember, tapes could be played in cars before CD's! Sweeping the nostalgia to one side, a great eighties synth pop/rock album. Like Silent Running, sits somewhere between U2 and Simple Minds.[First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]
I still have the original tape which I purchased over 25 years ago and still sounds fantastic through a decent audio system. An interesting mix of free form jazz coupled with almost progressive rock with Latin American influences.[First added to this chart: 02/06/2022]
This is a very good second album from a very underrated Southern Irish eighties band. Keyboards have been introduced on this album which fit well with the style of music. There were so many great bands rising to fame in the eighties, some of the lesser known acts never really soared to the heights they should have. I put Silent Running, Cry Before Dawn, Ten Ten and Drum Theatre firmly in this list.[First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]
I played this tape endlessly when I bought it over 20 years ago but hadn't listened to it in a long time. I loved their first album but this one didn't quite gel quite the same. Summer Rain and Mysteries of Love are the standout tracks for me. When I saw the vinyl re-issue I didn't rush to buy it. I may pick it up at some point.[First added to this chart: 04/25/2022]
Interestingly, the version of Best Shots which I have was recorded in 1987 and includes a similar but slightly different track list to the list above. 'Love is a Battlefield' is the classic eighties hit which saw many hours of play on Radio 1 at the time. Well deserved! A cracking compilation which if you can get on vinyl, is a real treat.[First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]
