Truly a concept album and with an amazing cover too. Xanadu is without question my all time favourite Rush track. It is hard to believe that there are only three in the band, the drums and percussion would lead you to think that there are two in that department. The bass pedals provide a real gutsy sound when the louder tracks open out. A good balance of music with Madrigal and Closer to the Heart providing the more 'sedate' moments. For starters, one of the best album covers of all time! The album itself is superb and possibly a forgotten or unrealised treasure by many. I much prefer this style to what came with The Wall. Some beautifully executed Mini Moog work on Dogs. Roger Waters best vocals on any album, Floyd or solo! [First added to this chart: 02/26/2022]

I agree with the comment made by mikeonfreeserve, as I often refer to in my album review comments, a fantastic cover most often holds within a fantastic album. This in my opinion is an excellent album and I do wonder where it would stand with a cover like Tales From Topographic Oceans. The cover is very different from previous albums and perhaps psychologically triggers an expectation that the music will be very different too. [First added to this chart: 02/19/2021]

Motivation Radio has a more 'funky feel' to it than Fish Rising and L, underpinned with almost 'funk' bass lines in parts it moves seamlessley from rock, to spacial with Gong like build up's to funky 'get up and dance' parts. Favourite track is without doubt Searching For the Spark with the VCS Synthi arpeggio like intro which acts as a foundation to build the rest of the instruments around. A close second favourite is the slower almost dreamy Octave Doctors. It is no surprise that Steve Hillage went on to form System 7 when you listen to this. Steve Hillage is a very underrated solo artist, excellent guitarist with a very distinct glissando guitar style. I have this on vinyl and CD but the vinyl version gets most use. Excellent on quality audio kit. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2022]

You only need to look at the band members and you expect this to be class and it delivers totally. A mixture of styles encompassing heavy rock, jazz, funk and blues. The lack of vocals is easily made up for by stunning musicianship throughout. In fact, there are vocals on one track but that track is actually my least favourite as the vocals don't really fit the overall album. This track loses the album 5 points in my score of 75 in the charts. [First added to this chart: 09/06/2020]

Stonker of a rock album, the guy can sure play guitar. I think this is his best work, better than Double Live Gonzo which suffers from poor recording quality compared to this studio album. When I was in my teens this guy was allegedly the loudest artist on the circuit. I would imagine he put on a hell of a show. [First added to this chart: 04/16/2022]

The more I listen to this album the more I want to listen to this album. I love the dark ambience of side two. Strange then, that I am now only really getting into Bowie since he popped his cloggs. I never got Bowie when I was younger... [First added to this chart: 02/28/2021]

Love this album for the musical experimentation, somewhat more accessible than some of his work. [First added to this chart: 02/13/2022]

I have three BJH compilation albums and would say this stands out above the other two. Often described as 'orchestral rock' and often dismissed from progressive artists lists, I would say that this album is as progressive as they come. Plenty of Mellotron, melodic tracks, aggressive edges, fast, slow, it's all here. 'Child of Man', 'Brother Thrush' and 'Mocking Bird' all tick the prog box well and truly! This isn't the original album cover, not sure why it was changed. I'm sure the original album cover was on BEA previously. This album holds a special place in my heart. I see like yesterday, a School mate lowering the needle onto the vinyl, grabbing a cricket bat and throwing himself around his parents front room, strumming cords on that bat in exact time. I had at that time, no idea why he put his School tie around his forehead or why he played most of the cords on his knees! It was only when I bought the album myself, several years later, that things clicked. An excellent rock album which I put among their top three. [First added to this chart: 01/11/2024]
