Top 24 Music Albums of 1984
by Junomoogmello
This chart is under construction. Music only being added as re-listened to (some having not been listened to in years) from my vinyl, CD and tape collection. That way comments made are relatively up to date, not based on memories from years ago. The first two albums I added, other than geographically, couldn't be further apart, yet both are excellent in their own way. Deep Purple Perfect Strangers, as a hard rocking original four comeback album and Heaven 17 How Men Are as a sophisticated synth oriented electronic pop classic with no expense spared on getting the right sound. It shows how brilliantly diverse the sound of the early eighties could be. As with the sixties psychedelia, the seventies prog, the eighties was a time of great musical creativity where synthesisers and electric drums/machines carved out some very notable sounds on some very special albums.

This is my favourite album from my eighties collection. I was lucky enough to get hold of a mint vinyl copy to replace my very worn original copy, only available, if at all, on vinyl I believe. This takes me back to my late teens, very eighties, very slick in production at a time when reverb was added to everything, but superb. The synth textures, electric drums and lashings of reverb give it a depth on vinyl which is amazing, add into the mix Peter Gamble's vocals and the well written, heartfelt lyrics, this album gets a maximum score from me. Considering also that U2 released 'The Unforgettable Fire' in the same year, this is in a different league and I really like U2!

Alphaville nailed the use of Linn Drum, coupled with really punchy synth bass lines overlaid with catchy synth lead lines. Add to the mix Marian Gold's strong vocal abilities this makes for a very good formula. Particular favourites are Big in Japan, Forever Young and Victory of Love.

This and The Riddle were two of my favourite albums from the eighties. I have been lucky enough to see Nik Kershaw twice, once in his heyday and more recently about ten years ago. Both were excellent concerts which immediately transformed me back to Human Racing and The Riddle on vinyl. To choose between the two albums is difficult, I think for me that Human Racing has the edge with three cracking tracks, 'I Wont Let the Sun Go Down On Me', 'Wouldn't it be Good' and 'Human Racing'. I still have my original vinyl copies which sound as good today as they did over thirty years ago.

2) Here's to Future Days
3) Quick Step and Side Kick
Great synth pop/rock with excellent rhythms along the way. Summer music to be sure! [First added to this chart: 03/28/2021]

A great eighties album which still sounds fresh to me today. Good flow from start to finish. 'The Riddle' and 'You Might' shine through as favourites for me. I remember seeeing Nik Kershaw at the Cornwall Coliseum in the eighties and was so impressed when he moved from keyboards to guitar to drums with ease. I put The Riddle slightly behind Human Racing.

Back in the eighties I bought this on tape which was 'state of the art', I could now listen while on the move and I did just about everywhere! In the car, on the beach, in the garden, while cycling! Probably the most played album from my eighties collection. Hardcore Rush fans compare this to their early eighties output and claim it disappointing when compared. I think you have to take the album into the context of the time, tensions between the East and West were at an all time high (again) and there is a general theme of Cold War tension which I think works perfectly. I see no point in comparing it to the early work, for one thing they can't keep repeating Xanadu and Tom Sawyer for ever and a day. For me then, a cracking album where the use of more synths and electric drums works totally. I have the vinyl version now which is superb.

Pivotal eighties album. If you are a keyboard player you will recognise what Howard was doing with the fairly rudimentary syncing of his kit, albeit he was fortunate to have some great synths in his arsenal, most notably the Jupier 8. He was and still is a clever musician. Pearl in the shell is a superb track, the synth textures are devine! I often see comments on this site about 'filler'. Filler is something I buy from the local DIY store to fill cracks and has become a modern term to allow people to express their dissatisfaction for tracks on album which they don't like. The term in my view is utter tripe. Either you like an album or you don't'...

Great eighties album. Pure sunshine music. The lesser known 'Like a Baby' is among my favourite Wham tracks. George Michael had an amazing voice and was at his pinnacle on this album.

An excellent album through and through. The influence of Trevor Horn is very evident on many tracks. Getting a single banned by Radio 1 at the time was a clever tactic and spearheaded the band into strardom. As much I like the classic hits, I equally love the slower less known tracks like 'Including the Ballad of 32' and 'The Only Star In Heaven'.

Excellent mid eighties synth based album, the vocals sold the album to me. Not a weak track on the album. I have it on CD and vinyl but always go to the vinyl first, worth having the album for 'Feels Like Heaven' and 'Hanging Gardens of Babylon' and 'All or Nothing' alone. The fact that I still have some of these tracks on one of my gym workout playlists thirty two years after I bought the vinyl must say something.
