Top 24 Music Albums of 1984

This chart is under construction. Music only being added as re-listened to (some having not been listened to in years) from my vinyl, CD and tape collection. That way comments made are relatively up to date, not based on memories from years ago. The first two albums I added, other than geographically, couldn't be further apart, yet both are excellent in their own way. Deep Purple Perfect Strangers, as a hard rocking original four comeback album and Heaven 17 How Men Are as a sophisticated synth oriented electronic pop classic with no expense spared on getting the right sound. It shows how brilliantly diverse the sound of the early eighties could be. As with the sixties psychedelia, the seventies prog, the eighties was a time of great musical creativity where synthesisers and electric drums/machines carved out some very notable sounds on some very special albums.

Released in 84 at the height of the synth pop/rock explosion, Howard indeed was and still is a pioneer in electronic pop/rock music. This captures some of his best work at the time and I fell in love with the rear photo of Howard's Jupiter 8. I always wanted one but could not and still cannot justify the crazy sums these are now changing hands for, so settled for a System 8! And Howard does use one!

I had never heard any Steeleye Span music before 2019, or rather I thought I hadn't. Having picked up a really good copy at a second hand record store for £4.00, my thought process was that if I don't like it then it's less than a couple of beers and I can use it for sampling. The first track was instantly recognisable and I was accused of listening to Christmas music in summer by my eldest daughter. Altogether, I am pleased with my purchase. After a thorough clean the album plays like new and reminds me a little of Fairport Convention. To be absolutely honest, I probably won't go out and buy more Steeleye Span but equally, I can see myself reaching for this once in a while. This is no criticism of the musicianship, just my personal preference. I also bought an album by Chicago and can see me listening to that a lot more. I can see me playing this album more at Christmas time, probably because of the first track.
