My listening thoughts.
Hexsewn is an extended cliffhanger disguised as an intro to the record. Then Death Is A Relief hits and it is typical post-rock mixed with sluggish blackgaze, with a vocalist that sounds like he thinks his words are more profound than what they actually are. Though I personally like it a bit. After 3 minutes, it culminates in a typical metal scream, this time much more intriguing and hardhitting. Lift Your Head starts like an indie rock, but slowly builds up to bigger post-rock isms a la Mogwai. The singer, except the subtle screaming at the end is a Wallmart Sufjan Stevens and the musicianship is a poor man's Mono. On the next song Empty Vials, the guitar overshadows the singer and that sounds much better. Yet the tune seems to not go all in like it should; it's like the equivalent of taking a walk 10 meter outside and then going slowly back inside. Something feels off and a little missing. Amaranthine is a tacky indie ballad with a tacky breakout and then a so-empty-it-is-intriguing ending, but it is a little too late. Shoegaze/Blackgaze is not supposed to be this vanilla. In the title track, the Post-Metal comes back and finally I open my eyes a bit more; this is what they are doing best. Have I said that the screaming is great, but it is. The song is cut off with acoustic guitar, disappointing because this song was more interesting than the others. Luckily, we get more of that in Slightless and it is more hypnotic but not to the pleasuring extreme. In the song Void of Light, it is a dystopian landscape until it gets to the screaming blackgaze once again and once again it is great. This track had a much better build-up as it was in sync with the pay-off. It ends on a borderline schizophrenic tone with the whispers. True Loss keeps being on the edge with a theatrical post rock instrumentation and the singer now sounds more in the zone, after 4 minutes it gets more Ethereal Wave-y and it is actually pretty nice, yet it stays in the post-rock overtone. The record ends with Blood Memory, which sounds like an average indie rock song, even the distorted guitar has lost the power. What a weak ending.
All in all, disappointing to hear a Shoegaze/Blackgaze / Dream Pop record that lacks the edge and melodic memorability to make it standout. But but but there were some good moments, and the high point Void of Light is saved! [First added to this chart: 10/21/2022]
