Top 25 Music Albums of 2012 by Jimmy Dread

Back when I were a nipper, I used to religiously compile an end-of-year Top 10 LPs in a little exercise book. Well, during a clearout I found this the other day and it's kinda inspired me to try and do likewise now, only digitally and in public for people to pour scorn/praise/derision/elation over it. Hence here's my 2012 list - a suprisingly good year for LPs bearing in mind we had to put up with Gangbang Style (or whatever its called) and more shitty X-Factor cocks. NOW FULLY UPDATED as January 2013 thus far has been pretty naff for new releases of note, therefore backtracking through last year to check what I may otherwise have missed... Jimmy, January 2013

Twee-licious, 25 minutes long and more twee than a walk along Brighton sea front with an anorak on, candy floss in one hand and a girl in a flowery dress on the other, and in which a bunch of Swedish so-and-sos hijack Amelia Fletcher's indie pop template and create possibly the BEST twee-pop fest I've heard in quite a while. Lovely. Twee factor 10 in fact. Oh, did I mention it was rather twee? [First added to this chart: 12/10/2012]

Still the band of the 21st century - like Peel was with The Fall, I can't honestly say that (in my eyes) they've ever made a dud record. Centipede Hz has already been touted as the album that best represents their live sound - in fairness, nothing ever could, but this comes close. Despite radio jingles, Deakin singing and even a Tomboy cast off (New Town Burnout), this LP knocks everything else released in 2012 into a cocked hat. Peerless. A couple of years ago a band called Yuck tried to merge Pavement with (what some other BEA members at least thought was) a shoegaze sensibility and for about 5 minutes they fooled the world into thinking they were genuine contenders. It's a shame PAWS weren't around then - they would have made them look like fools. Dinosaur Jr meets Weezer at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut and make a helluva din. British album of the year - screw what the Mercury Prize committee say... [First added to this chart: 11/11/2012]

After Eating Us paled into comparison against the wonderful Dandelion Gum, Tobacco et al debunked back to their Pittsburgh haunted house and, after the abortive attempt of the Psychic Love Damage EP (Tobacco didn't think it was good enough evidently), went back to the drawing board. Warped vocodered vocals, dirty beats and crazy lyrics abound - "peanut butter lung" being a personal favourite - but there's just the right blend of schuzz and hip-hop dream pop here to ensure listening lasts far beyond Hallowe'en.
