The best British Psych Rock albums of all time

There are so many great psychedelic rock albums made my British artists that I thought that I'd start to compile a list and maybe start a thread around it once I have enough to start to make it interesting
Such early days and no particular order yet
There’s a lot of Bevis here but I wouldn’t class all bevis albums as true psych so some weeding is going to be necessary

To be honest, this is not what you might call a “proper” album in the sense that the band went into the studio with the intent of making an album. It was compiled from sessions recorded in 1990 and1991 but is so wonderfully consistent that you would never know it. A contend for the title of best British Psychedelic Rock album of all time.
It’s raw and a little lo-fi, as you might expect from a bunch of session recordings. It’s guitar-heavy and the wah-wah effects are stellar but in realty it’s has complex song structures.
We also have echoing vocals and intense distortion. It’s got sprawling, hypnotic jams which remind me of the American band Endless Boogie. Basically, like the Boogie, it’s guitar freakouts of epic proportions. It’s what you would expect from contemporaries of The Bevis Frond
I’ve read it described as “neo-psychedelia, space rock, and garage-psych”. Yep, it’s all of those things.
Standout tracks? Everything. North Eastern has got wailing guitars to die for whilst Sunstroke / Mindtrain a mind blowing 13-minute psychedelic behemoth. Fireball is also epic. [First added to this chart: 08/08/2026]

With the odd expectation, sequels are rarely better than the original. Godfather 2, Aliens and Terminator 2 break that mould and you can add this album to that list
Don’t get me wrong, Acid Jam is a brilliant album but this sequel, 12 years later is fractionally better than the original. The spontaneity of the rather messy original is replaced by a more thought-out affair.
It’s packed full of psychedelic quality, and you’d think that at around two-and-a-half-hour the quantity might drop. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Its still possess the fiery, uninhibited guitar freakouts, "Reformation Blues" and "Funeral Ballet Music" are prime examples. It feels like it’s less immediate but better planned and resourced and it benefits from that. [First added to this chart: 08/10/2026]

I already had this album in my top 500 and that hasn’t changed. I already though that it was a great album and, I have to admit, listening to and commenting on each track has not enhanced my feelings about the album.
I still don’t get some of the quirkier tracks, Being For The Benefit….. and When I’m Sixt Four for example but there are some absolute classics here, A Day In The Life and Within You Without You are obvious examples.
