Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Both Residents and Daniel Johnston? Very cool. You have good taste in odd music.
I'm just starting to get into Daydream Nation, it seems like the kind of album that really grows on you over time. I can see why someone would choose it for their #1 album. Many of my top picks are featured in your chart, so I'd love to get some recommendations! I've been meaning to listen to Built To Spill and The Magnetic Fields for a while now, are there any others you think I might like? Assuming you're still around...
