Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)
This track is rated in the top 1% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 88.7/100, a mean average of 87.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.9/100. The standard deviation for this track is 14.2.

As an R.E.M. fan, I for many years absolutely abominated this song. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for compassion and accompaniment in times of trouble, but not with a profoundly lame rewrite of "Bridge over Troubled Water" with horrendous-singing-era Michael Stipe braying cliches at me. However, in recent times, I have come more to terms with it. Raised my rating from 5 to 70. I understand more the point of the song, and I can't knock John Paul Jones's string arrangement.
The greatest anti-suicide song ever written

Although I always think of Dwight Schrute now when I hear this song it's still so exceptional. The sweeping strings, Michael's delicate and impressive vocal range - a classic.

Impressive, I can always listen to this.
Great song but not exceptional. Haunting, emotional simple lyrics delivered with silky sombre vocals supported by nice acoustic guitar and keyboards/organ(?) and drum machine(?). Enhanced with yet another strings arrangement half way through. I have no problem with introducing strings at this point but for me it's a wee bit too sugary bearing in mind the subject matter. A minor criticism hence my score.

This song saved many lives so i give it 100 points.
Best R.E.M. song ever.

Incrivelmente bela!
This is one of the few songs that I can listen to a million times and still impress me. Michael Stipe's lyrics are awesome, comforting also. Because everybody hurts...sometimes.. so hold on!

This is actually my least favourite song in the album. It's a great song, but doesn't really fit in with the flow of the album very well. It has a very different tone from just about every other R.E.M. song.
