Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.0/100, a mean average of 80.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.5.

“I recently listened to all the R.E.M. albums from the beginning through to this one. That's cool. Granted, I'm not much of a fan, but I arrived at the conclusion that for my listening purposes, they're more of a "greatest hits band" than an "own every album" kind of band (I know, almost as shameful…”

An excellent compilation. The first REM collection to include both IRS and the Warner Bros. years. Of the new three tracks, hallelujah, is fine, though nothing special, we all go back to where we belong, is a lovely Burt Bacharach-esque farewell song, but, a month of Saturdays, is quite possibly the worst ever REM song. The rest,of course, is spectacular. America's greatest ever band. (Edited)

A perfectly solid collection spanning their 31 year history. Good introduction to their work.

A good sampler of all eras of REM, from the IRS years through the Warner Bros years. And the sound is great on this as well. I have all the original albums, but I heard things on this compilation I've never heard before. A good place to start if you're new to REM. (Edited)
