Dylan's almost funeral hymn. His shot and cracked voice is perfect for this eerie ballad of a man knowing, or at least suspecting that the end is near. Considering Dylan was fifty-six at the time of it's release it might seem a bit pessimistic but considering that he had been suffering from health problems and was hospitalized for a time meant that Dylan had a reason to question his mortality. As he said himself, 'I thought I'd be seeing Elvis soon'. No, it's not quite dark yet, but it is getting there.
I'm not sure this is a great song. It's certainly an emotive song. I would say his most emotional song. About what? I'm not quite sure. But it's not subtle. Almost like some sort of teenage angst through the voice of an old man. And the pain can certainly be felt in that voice, peaking in the last verse.
It's not a fast song. There's a great buildup before the 4th chorus (and after the 4th chorus). Music manages to create tension without any prominent instrument solo. A sign of good production by my man Daniel Lanois. The case could be made against using that twice, but I like it too much to complain
