Frey remarked once during a show. Tom didn't like our cover and then he got the cheque. It shows how blatantly arrogant Frey is and it shows his money and music attitude. Or it's just a joke. Waits is a renowned anti-commercialist and his song being covered by just about the most commercially successful band of the 70's must have been hard to swallow. Nevertheless, this cover version loses all the grittiness Waits is known for. The song is absolutely stunningly beautiful. the soaring choruses are something of their own even by Eagles standards.The interplay between the high pitched vocals and the waremer vocals of Henley are great. This is one of the best covers ever made.
Tom Waits wasn't too much of a fan of the Eagles but this version of his brilliant, Ol '55, is actually rather nice. An enjoyable cover, not bad at all.
