My final ranking order.
Listening to their discography has been an eye-opening experience for me. To discover the various stages and experiments The Lips have been through has been extraordinary and it makes me appreciate them even more. Some of those experiments may have ended turmoil (trial and error) but these are just reflective of my first listens (barring the top three albums) and hopefully they will grow on me in the near future. Heck, my current ranking could change in a few years time! I feel proud for actually completing one of these things properly and thank you CubaZed for dedicating this Let's Rank to one of the greatest bands of all time. From observing this thread, this might result into the most interesting Let's Rank so far. Shows that with a diverse band and catalogue; you can have diverse opinions. _________________
Re-listening to the Lips 90's output i think that the run of albums from Priest Driven Ambulance to Soft Bulletin trumps Pavement's discography as the best 90's "indie rock" band

So psyched that my Lips have once again embraced their inner freak flag! I’d kind of given up on them after the one-two pop punch of Yoshimi and Mystics since they seemed to be catering to what would play well in a festival setting - fun, anthemic pop songs. I could almost picture Wayne pitching what props and pratfalls would accompany each song as they were composing them. And I didn’t blame them at all. They deserved it! But, it definitely seemed that the Lips had become more of a multimedia festival experience. So, it’s nice to see these erstwhile Peter Pans of Alt Rock once again taking some chances and … the dreaded m word… maturing. Sounds like they’ve been listening to a lot of Liars.
