|
Hey guys, a Mr. GraBaoski recently complained that the site didn't talk enough about his sort of music. So I thought I would help alleviate the problem by making a thread about pop music.
I've recently realized there's a huge poptimist subculture on RYM, where people worship at the feet of Soulja Boy and think "Stupid Hoe" is the greatest minimalist piece ever composed. It's great.
This thread is not for indie pop, dream pop, power pop, or any other sort of pseudo-pop that is already culturally accepted by rockists. That crap is already talked about more than enough on BEA.
EDIT: Actually, here's a good way to look at this thread: If you can imagine a 15-year-old boy saying "Why don't you listen to real music like _______", you shouldn't talk about _______ here.
So I'll start with something simple: What do you guys think of the new CRJ? The new Hilary Duff? What's your favorite Soulja Boy release

My problem with the kind of pop you are talking about, is that although i can initially love a song or even an album, the likes for it dissipate much much faster than any other genre. Maybe its the over exposure to it, but i tend to stop liking songs after a very short period of time.
Other than that. My current favorite song is Major Lazer's Lean On. Brilliant in every wAy.
Taylor Swift is my all time favorite pop artist.
Im digging A lot off Avicci lately. Weird kind of Edm-folk-pop. _________________ "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming"

This thread would work better if you didn't insist on antagonising others in the OP. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

I think that part of the reason you have a lot of people who are as dismissive of pop as they are is because it's often harder to find pop albums that are consistent - it's just a single-oriented genre. Which is fine. The stylings of pop lend themselves to be heard in short, spastic bursts, rather than drawn out and developed over 50+ minutes. There's also the radio aspect, which clearly lends itself to individual singles as well.
To answer the specific questions: the new CRJ album is even better than her last, I think. It easily holds its own amongst albums from any other genre released this year.
I've only heard the new single from Duff, but I do like it!
Not familiar enough w/ soulja boy. _________________ My top songs of the 2010s

Sorry, I didn't mean the RYM part to a nudge or anything. I just was shocked at how many people listen to both Lawrence Butch Morris and Ashley Tisdale, and I feel like there could be some of that lying around here, too.
Anyway, I just became obsessed with this amazing Shakira album.

Laundry Service by Shakira
Every song just feels so perfect, with the perfect mixture of sweet and sour in the music, vocals, and lyrics. I've loved several Shakira albums before this, but I never realized she could be this perfect.

I don't know what world you live in but in the world I live everyone is dismissive of everything but pop. _________________ "I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more."

To be fair, I haven't run into many full-blown rockists IRL since I started college. But I remember back in late 2012 when I announced that "Call Me Maybe" was my single of the year. A lot of my friends on social media were furious, and one of them even argued that a Van Halen song was the best single of 2012
