Big, vague anthems that are nonetheless undeniably catchy. Oddly, I don't hate it, but that's probably strictly nostalgia speaking. This, Manu Chao, and Santana's Supernatural just remind me of French supermarchés on a particular summer holiday.

Mediocre album, especially following the super underappreciated electro-masterpiece Pop.
Don't even feel the need to listen to it again.

The moment U2 said "we're not selling as many records when we're actually being experimental and interesting, lets go for lowest common denominator and sell millions but also be crap"

They've been stuck in that ever since. Such a shame when they had such a blinder of a 90's

Exactly what was said in the team of trusted experts conversation.

I mean ATYCLB isn't bad, and is much better live (stuffy production for sure), but it most definitely is the starting point of the loss of artistry from these boys. Pop was genius lost on the public, and while this successfully rebooted the band into mega millionaires with catchy tunes that a whole new generation of U2 fans were born, and has some solid tracks, it's the start of a direction I wish the band never took. It took them from a respected artistry realm and put them in with the standard "rock" fair.

In other news, I second Skinny. This album was a big part of my teenage years.

Also I suppose during or after is yet to be decided... my vote is after Pop.

My take is this - Yes, it’s not wildly experimental, but it’s not rehashing the past either. It’s the point at which they incorporated all that they had been in the 80’s and 90’s, and brought it all forward.

This is the pattern of life for humans - you spend the first half pushing the boundaries of who you can be, and the second half accepting who you are. Self acceptance doesn’t have to be slavishly living in your past glories - and I don’t think this album is that at all.

It’s very much a mid life album. Bono’s voice is older, grained with experience. The songs are tinged with mortality. His father died. He’s coming to terms with his own mortality. It’s not reliving the idealism of their youth, it’s the application of hope and idealism to their 40-something selves.

I think this is what irks people about U2 - that they’re relentlessly hopeful. People just don’t believe it. They find that a tough pill to swallow. It’s much easier to believe nihilism, and there’s always plenty of it on offer elsewhere.
