- Post subject: Music "For Teenage Girls"
|
K, this was originally a response to Frogger's post, but it would be hella off topic and it was rather long so I'll make a thread for it, we could get some good discussion.
Anywho:
MrFrogger wrote: | I really can't stand him, it just seems like he's taking his obvious influences, and channeling them into formulaic modern "Indie" music, for teenage girls to listen to and feel some sort of satisfaction. Just my opinion though. |
Kind of irritating when music is described as "for teenage girls" as a way of putting the music down. This probably originates from boy bands being targeted at teenage girls, but it isn't a good thing to continue propagating the idea that there is a certain type of music teenage girls listen to, or that any music labeled thusly is inherently bad. It is probably as silly as putting down hip hop by saying it is "music for black people"
Both ageist and sexist (not calling you either Froggster, you said it flippantly, but the ideas behind it are both ageist and sexist) and the kind of rubbish thing that makes it seem as if males listen to superior music and that women have no place in music discussion. Males listen to just as much rubbish music, but girls (especially teenage ones?) are the only ones who are used as a way to describe music one finds simple (or something like that?).
You could go the opposite way and say "Foo Fighters is music for very lame men." That might be true, actually. Anyways, it just seems silly and juvenile. Not even describing the type of teenage girl that would listen to it, just teenage girls, full stop. You're trying to describe music as shallow and simple or something like that, and instantly, bam, it comes to mind...teenage girls are synonymous with shallow and simple! (sarcasm)
Which is weird, considering...all the music "teenage girls" listen to? My Chemical Romance and so on? I listened to that when I was younger, lots of males do, probably as many males as females, but it is still "teenage girl's music". Always used negatively.
However, I understood what he meant completely, I just wonder if this kind of casual sexism regarding music is why the music world seems to be a mostly male dominated place, or at least it adds to it. It definitely doesn't help.
But then on the other hand, if you think of my example above, hip hop is music strongly rooted in African-American culture, could this be a similar case here? Well, are teenage girls a culture? That'd be weird. Maybe so. But even then, the main problem is that it is used in a negative way. Makes it sound like you don't like teenage girls. What's not to like about teenage girls? XD
Frogger don't feel this is aimed at you, so much as...I felt like talking about it and your post was the catalyst. XD
So yes, discuss,
*am I full of shit?
*Is am uz guz luz tuz?
*Was a more liberal America what he meant by "music for teenage girls"?
*will Frogger still love me after this?
*Do teenage girls exist?
*is there a reason I'm continually second guessing myself?

Most of the teenage girls I knew when I was in high school actually liked a lot of punk and metal and older folk-y music, but I guess that was just me talking with a more specific crowd. I remember sitting in class one day and a girl at my table was asking her friend to make a CD mix (the dark days of 2002), listing songs and when she ran out of ideas asked specifically for "girls music", apparently like that fit some sort of prism. So, Music For Teenage Girls is not something that can be specifically categorized, unlike what us young males, um, can sometimes be led to believe. It all depends on the individual, just like the young male listener. I don't think the post that's being referred to was meant to be taken in offense, but it was a very poor choice of words for articulating a criticsm, in all honesty. Completely forgiveable though.

Yeah my point wasn't to attack Frogger's post, it just made me start thinking about it. XD

* 1. no, a little full of it though.
* 2. Yes. And you should be proud of it.
* 3. Yes
* 4. No. MC Frogger does not love. He does not feel. He simply scans and hunts and finds things that are not cool and makes fun of them or completely puts them down with utter certainty and conviction. Then he moves on to the next kill. The next shitty music that isn't experimental or cutting edge or real or whatever the fuck. Frogger is a machine.
* 5. Yea. And they sometimes make me uncomfortable until they turn 18... Then they make me more uncomfortable but in a different way.
* 6. Yes there is, but really the only the truth you'll ever find is within yourself. I wouldn't take a bunch of random advice or pointers from music snobs on a music forum.
Honestly... I like a lot of the music that is often immaturishly (spelling) called music for girls. I love DCFC for example. I like some 90s pop that was engineered apparently for the young, predominantly
Female audience (I'm sorry but the Spice Girls were legit and badass... So was Nsync, and some 98 degrees too... And don't even get me started on some of the great Savage Garden hits... Etc)
So fuck all. _________________ -Ryan

Yeah, I like some of Justin Bieber's work. Heck, One Direction put of a few jams, it's all up to the vibe.
Music is for everyone!

First of all, the post was mostly based on some friends of mine(who are in fact, teenage girls) who love his music, and see him as a 21st Century Bob Dylan sort of character, which I obv don't agree with. Taking music and rooting it down to sub cultures and stereotypes isn't cool, but in this small sub section of a friends circle in northern California, it is, haha.
You have sparked a good conversation though, and one that should be had.
Also:
Teenage girls are great
Foo Fighters is in fact, music for aging Grunge Rockers
I still don't like Jake Buggs Music
I still like Brandon

Considering in all honesty the songs I listened to the most last year were from Lorde, Charli, Marina and Ariana... I love "young girly" music (couldn't put that in a less creepy way, srry), and embrace it all ya dahlings. And that's only one realm of the entire Teenage Girl Music kingdom.
Teenage Girl Music is great

Indie rock is for anti-social, middle-to-upper class reared males who will most likely still be living in their parents' basement when they're 30.
