This album totally changed my perspective of music when it was released and remains an album that I return to regularly.
I like the theme from Midnight Cowboy. That said, one listen was probably enough for me.
About time that it gets Album Of The Day... this one's a masterpiece.
By far their best work. Great vocals by Mike Patton on this one.
Some great songs but a fair few bad ones.
A fantastic album. One of the most influential and eclectic albums of the decade.
This is probably Faith No More's most complete album. The Real Thing is their most popular release but this one is much better as a whole.
Faith No More was formed in 1982, but it took them a long time to get their lineup straight. After going through numerous lead singers (including Courtney Love), they found Mike Patton, who took the band to a completely different level, particularly on the single "Epic" from The Real Thing. Angel Dust is the follow up to that album, the first on which Patton has a say in the songwriting...and it's great. Patton's vocals are frightening, Jim Martin's guitar is powerful, but it's the keyboard work of Roddy Bottum that really give this album its edge...at a time when keyboards were so not cool. Every song sounds like it's going to explode into shrapnel. Highly aggressive and yet very listenable stuff. "MidLife Crisis", "Land Of Sunshine" and "Everything's Ruined" are highlights. The album ends with a straightforward reading of the theme from "Midnigtht Cowboy".
Unfortunately, Martin left after this album, and Faith No More was never able to build on what they did on this album. It still sounds great today, though. Well worth having.
With little metal music under my belt I looked forward to time with Faith No More’s Angel Dust...I slipped in to metal mode comfortably – there are only two acceptable volume settings here, ten and eleven, so I apologize to some good folk for the disruption…just had to check out the car speakers could take it.
I didn’t find FNM as alien as I thought – they have a combination of intelligent rock and sense of humour. FNM’s Midlife Crises and Everything’s Ruined are probably my two favourities on the album just for sheer turn it up loud and enjoy. The album also features one of their better known tracks in the UK, a cover of Lionel Richie’s Easy, but by the time I reached it at the end of the album it sort of came as a disappointment after the power of the rest.
