Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.8/100, a mean average of 72.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

A beautiful and mind soothing album in the vein of Uncle Bob and Van Morrison.
Favorite Tracks:Babylon, Nightblindness, Say Hello Wave Goodbye
A good album although it does lack some upbeat material, the single version of 'Babylon' is better than the one here likewise Marc Almond's version of'Say Hello' is a better upbeat version too though the're good tracks regardless, best tracks 'This Years Love','Please Forgive Me','Sail Away'.
Its a good solid album, lyrically very good. The only fault i would have with the album are that the songs are around the same tempo. My favourites are the first two songs along with sail away.
According to ratings "we're not right" is the weakest song on this. LOL
Great songs, great voice. Very good.
A lovely record. Still David Gray's best album, white ladder, is a beautiful album full of fantastic songs. Babylon, is off course excellent, one of the best singles of the late nineties, but there is plenty more on offer here. This year's love, is gorgeous, sail away, is a strong cut, and the cover of Soft Cell's, say hello, wave goodbye, is absolutely sublime, one of the best covers for years. Obviously heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, Gray also employs a modern sensibility that makes the record still sound great today. White ladder, is a great late night album, David Gray would never be this good again.
Love that this is the album of the day...I had to immediately put it on, as I'd all but forgotten about it.
Great collection of songs and he's also super entertaining live.
You get the feeling that David Gray had been through a messy breakup when he wrote this album. Very underrated album which doesn't have a weak song on it. Brilliant lyrics sung with his cutting voice. Even though this was his 4th album, he had to finance the recording himself and it was recorded in his living room which I think why this sounds so great compared to his albums that came later, which sound overproduced in places.
Never listened to the whole album but have heard a few tracks. Seems like it's criminally underrated. Babylon's a great song and may be one of the stand outs of the 90s. I think there's another song on here from a movie that I like a lot too. Forget which movie though. Have heard David Gray acoustically on the radio too, seems like a great live performer. A shame he hasn't been bigger in the US. Great voice.
