Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.4/100, a mean average of 67.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

Their best since Wish. In 2004, The Cure are old news. Hell, in 2000 and 1996 they're over the hill. But whereas those records are clinging to movements and ideas that are slipping away when The Cure gets to them, their self-titled album hits at the exact right moment. Post punk and new wave revivals are all the rage. And while The Cure isn't delivering their out-and-out sharpest songwriting, they are rejuvenated to a degree that we haven't seen in over a decade by the time this album is released. While The Cure has always been a band that dabbled in sonic weight, be it dense atmosphere, or even a more straightforward rock cut from time to time (particularly on their later work), this self-titled debut is their heaviest production and performances yet. You're not going to confuse it for a grunge or metal or punk record, and in some ways they're only just now dabbling in the sounds that their goth and art rock counterparts were doing at the dawn of The Cure's career. Better late than never, and without sanding down what makes the band unique. It may not be a full-fledged great record as it occasionally threatens to be, but this is a welcome return to form.
Past their best, but there are still a few highlights - I Don't Know What's Going On, Alt End and Anniversary are nice but overall this is a very forgettable album.
Sad to report The Cure lost me as a fan back with the "Bloodflowers" release, and were not able to win me back with this self-titled release. The careening screech of Robert Smith and the senseless lyrics lose any creativity that the music starts to embolden.
I just don't get it.
Underrated album. It's not The Cure's best, but to say it's their worst is not doing this album justice. It's heavier than most albums by The Cure, but it works, especially the opener.
This is sort of heavy and odd. I don't like it.
The first Cure album I owned and got me hooked. Although 'Lost' and 'The Promise' link back to Disintegration and Pornography, this is the Cure sound for the 21st century.
