Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.4/100, a mean average of 79.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.8.

Sometime in the 2000s, I was introduced to Wye Oak by my friend Caitlin, who generously sent me a CD with a couple of their albums on it. The Knot was my favorite of the two, and remains my favorite of theirs to this day. This is a genuinely gorgeous rock album--it has all the elements of some of the nineties bands with female singers (I'm thinking of Letters to Cleo, Belly, Throwing Muses, and others) that I felt were on the verge of greatness, but seemed held back by either a lack of songcraft or a lack of immediacy. The Knot has plenty of both, and is further strengthened by Andy Stack's imaginative arrangements on the drum kit. I love the unrepentantly rock climax of "For Prayer," as well as what is for me one of Jenn Wasner's signature lines, full of both compassion and world-worn toughness: "Baby, what's all this about?"
