Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.4/100, a mean average of 77.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.7.

One of the best Porcupine Tree albums. I really mean that. Yeah, it's a compilation, but it's also an album in every sense of the word and I find myself coming back to it more and more for the unique sound and atmosphere it has. Perfect for a long night after a hard day.
I don't normally like adding compilations to favourite albums as this is a collection of b-sides and new tracks from the Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun sessions. But this album really identifies the dearth of good material Steven Wilson had. Many of these tracks are good enough to be on a normal album. Particular favourites are Even Less (full length), Buying New Soul, Disappear and Untitled.
Despite being comprised of songs that were left off of Porcupine Tree's 'Stupid Dream' and 'Lightbulb Sun', 'Recordings' is constructed just as well as either of the two, is more interesting, and has just as good a production value. Here the band well and truly establish their own unique brand of psychedelia. The music generally maintains a mellower vibe than most of Porcupine Tree's other outputs - an obvious influence being early Pink Floyd - and occasionally even harkens back to the heyday of bands like Blur and The Beach Boys.
