Totally agree with Old Toad. Live at Klook Kreek's (recorded in '64) is where it's at! I'll probably add it to the site (it was released in 1978) in the near future. Vital stuff!
I really can't stand the Jack Bruce tune Baby Make Love To Me (he cowrote it with his girlfriend at the time), and I can't believe they made it the second track on this album. That's crazy to me; it's such a weird and off-putting track, it's like they want to drive the squares and teeny-boppers away before they even get started, which...fine, but why not warm folks up with some appetizers before hitting them with the weird love-dirge?
The sequencing is awful--how do they not front-load their amazing version of Wade In The Water, saving it for nine tracks in??? They knew enough to open live sets with it; check out Live At Klook's Kleek to hear them tear the friggin' walls down with it to open a set.
The Sound of '65 is not a great album, but a handful of the tracks show the quirkiness, soulfulness, heaviness, and naked honesty that made the GBO great. If you don't mind using your imagination a bit because of the bad recording quality, the Klook's Kleek album, not listed on this site, gives a better sense of what this awesome line-up was capable of for the two years that it lasted.
