Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 57.9/100, a mean average of 57.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 57.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 20.0.

It’s a bit of an insult that the utter dross that is St Anger is currently rated above this reasonably good album. I like some of the deviations here and if I try not to compare too much with the epic nature of their earlier iconic stuff this album comes off as a great listen. Unforgiven II also suffers from comparison with the first Unforgiven instalment. Not too many bands can write a song that is as good as that.
But yeah, there’s a lot of very average songs here which is something you could never say about their pre-load albums.
I was late in getting this due to all the criticism it received. It's not bad at all. In fact I think it's actually pretty good. It's not thrash hence why the early loyalists hated it. But it is an album full of great hard rock/classic metal tracks. There's nothing fucking wrong with this at all.
Melhor do que parece, mas pior que deveria!
Some really underrated songs on this album. Fixxxer, Low Man's Lyric, Where the Wild Things Are and Devil's Dance are some of the better songs from this period of their career.
I know, not the greatest Metallica album ever, but Fuel, UNFORGIVEN II, Low Man's Lyric, and Fixxxer are DAMN good songs.
Starts out stronger, but kinda fizzles out... much better than Load and might be in my top 5 of Metallica.
Like Load, it's been slammed by the purists. I applaud Metallica's attempt to change and grow. This album is inconsistent, but it's entirely listenable, with some pretty strong tracks. Way better than St. Anger.
For me this is their worst album. That said, it's not bad, and it has a lot of quality songs. It just didn't need to exist. The good songs from this and the (much more numerous) good songs from Load could have been combined into one disc fairly painlessly.
