Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 14% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.5/100, a mean average of 73.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.3.

It might just be me, but there seems to be an excessive amount of noodling on this album, whether it be vibraphone, synthesizer, fretless bass or anything else. It's not that that makes it a bad collection of tunes, it's just that there is a distinct feeling that, had Weather Report conspired to be a little more focused, we could have had a really great LP on our hands. As it is, it's left on the shelf as merely 'pleasing'. Not a label to be ashamed of necessarily, but certainly not what the band could be capable of.

Not quite as strong as my favourite Weather Report albums (Mysterious Traveller, Live in Tokyo, Tale Spinnin'), but not very far behind. Has the same breezy, summery vibe as Tale Spinnin', but isn't quite as successful in its execution, occasionally lapsing into moments that feel a little too formulaic. Then again, songs like 'Cannonball' - with its slinking, retrofuturist synth lines and that famous Shorter tenor sax that slices through the air - exemplify everything I love about the band during this period. Things started to go downhill after this, and I'd say this is the last amazing Weather Report album (even though I have a lot of time for Night Passage, and parts of Heavy Weather). All-round dope shit.
