Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. An underrated track for me. It's a fairly simple ballad. It may not hit the heights of Entangled and Ripples from the previous album but it's still beautifully sung and played. I always enjoy listening to it.
A lot of Genesis purists like to declare this one the black sheep of the band's prog years. I don't understand those people at all. Your Own Special Way is a gorgeous love song, written by Mike Rutherford, nonetheless. I think it gets resented so much because of how telling it was for the pop direction that Genesis was heading it, and I think that's completely unfair to this beauty. Yes, the lyrics are a bit sappy and maybe a little too sticky sweet some, and I don't think Genesis quite perfected the prog ballad until Follow You Follow Me on the next album, but the instrumentation here is just fabulous, and Collins' charming vocals are perfect for it. The choruses of this one are some of the single most delightful moments on the album. You probably won't hear many other Genesis superfans say it, but Your Own Special Way is one of the clear highlights of Wind & Wuthering.
