So damn fluid and creative and virtuosic. Listening to this album literally affects my mood, makes me feel a lot faster and vital. Pretty fabulous. Also the slower tracks are just sexy as hell.
All you really need to know about whether or not this is just a Hall & Oates album without Oates is that it was produced by Robert Fripp. Hall is an exceptional singer, and he shows his range and flexibility on this great collection of non pop songs. This album deserves more love...a fine example of an artist going solo and stepping outside of the comfort zone. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

was today's best listen. It could have been a masterpiece, as such, it's already excellent (and my #1 of the current year - and yes I've heard Piรฑata a few times and like it ๐ ).
Next best thing was Richard & Mimi Fariรฑa's Celebrations for a Grey Day (1965) though. Expected some kind of protest singing with voice upfront, heart-rending left-of-the-left lyrics etc. Not at all! Think more of an early equivalent of Fairport Convention, on the other side of the Atlantic. It truly is a very good record, pretty diverse, nice instrumentals, nice voices, very truthful to the 60s folk idiom for sure, but very very well done. Go for it.
Love Moon and Antarctica. Wasn't crazy about We Were Dead... but I am still eagerly awaiting new music. Today's album for me already is the excellent new War on Drugs album, their best so far.
These guys are friends of my wife, who met them via a band message board. We see them when they come to Denver, which is often...they do very well here. They're from Austin, TX, and they put on a great show. This is their first full album. They are blessed with three songwriters who do equal duty, and they play alt-country with the proper amount of enthusiasm. A fine, but little known band. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Rated way to low on my own charts. "Johnny Strikes Up The Band", "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", "Excitable Boy", "Werewolves Of London" and "Accidentally Like A Martyr" may be the best first five songs on any album ever. Plus it has "Lawyers, Guns And Money". Zevon was pure genius, and when his albums were good, they were simply great. One of the best songwriters of his era, and one of the most under appreciated as well. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
