Great albums with bad reputations

Agree with sentiments around Monster. A strong, catchy suite of songs that seemed to get bad raps for not being Automatic for the People mark 2. Hideous album cover didn't help either but that should never be a real factor.

But I do like both albums as well

Btw Reveal was even hammered down more and in duch a way I didn't even buy it unit' I discovered how good it was.

Santana's Zebop! generally gets trashed as an 80s sellout album, but I still think its one of his best. It is full of great songs, still has Santana's trademark Caribbean percussion, and his guitar tone and playing are as clear and masterful as ever. Yes, it has that 80s production, but it is not without Santana soul.

Similar things could be said about widely panned albums from the 80s by other classic artists, including

The Kinks -- Give the People What They Want/State of Confusion/Word of Mouth
The Who -- Face Dances
Jefferson Starship -- Winds of Change
The Moody Blues -- The Present
Rush -- Hold Your Fire
