  • Post subject: Great songs on mediocre/bad albums?
Lots of great artists, esp the ones with long and fruitful careers have released many stinker albums. However, on those albums there might be a song which is absolutely fantastic and would be considered a classic if it was on a better album.
Typical example is Every Grain Of Sand by Bob Dylan, amazing song on a terrible album.

Any other examples?

Too many to name but some that I thought of right away are

The Diamond Sea - Washing Machine, Sonic Youth
An ok album, but Diamond Sea is a masterpiece.

Under Pressure - Hot Space, Queen
A terrible album, but this single is great. Courtesy of late great David.

Ulysses - Tonight, Frany Ferdinand
A pretty bad album, but this song is so catchy. Definitely not their best work, but it's good, especially compared to that album...

I don't think this quite answers your question because some of these albums are rated as classics by a lot of people, but to me they are poor-to-mediocre at best. But each one of them has one absolutely fantastic track on it that makes me wonder how the rest of the album turned out so mediocre compared to the one great track. These are the ones I'm talking about by John Lennon.

Mind Games..... The title track. It's great I always thought.
Walls and Bridges... #9 Dream. Which is awesome.
Imagine.... The title track is the only one that kicks in for me.

American Pie by Don McLean

a bit cliche of an answer to this question but absolutely true in my opinion.

Blind Melon by Blind Melon

No Rain is the only song i really really like others a little too heavy handed in my opinion

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi

Dead or alive is a good song

I assume the song you were talking about is American Pie, but I kind of like Vincent better.

Yes I was. I get people liking Vincent I don't though. A little too schmaltzy for me but I like some even sappier songs you know how it is some things either grab you or they don't. Wink

"Joy in Repetition" Graffiti Bridge - Prince

One of my all-time favorite Prince songs on an album with more subpar tracks than good.

Crowded House by Crowded House

The track "Don't dream it's over" is a perfect 80's track but the album I found quite mediocre.

Scope by Nobukazu Takemura

The track 'Kepler' is a something of a stand-out in an album that is otherwise pretty unforgiving.
