Maybe some Mount Eerie would fit? Although the last album (A Crow Looked At Me) isn't so much loneliness as it is heart-wrenching sadness. Hopefully I don't ever have the urge to listen to that one ever again.

Supremely disappointed in this list. You skipped right over hundreds of years of music. C'mon AH! (The ones you bolded are great though.)
Barber's Adagio for Strings is filled with loneliness and optimism. One of my favorite songs. |
Perhaps I mis-estimated my telepathy this time 🧱 (hate it when I do that!) ... but I didn't get the idea he was open to Classical for this list ... otherwise, yes, there's plenty more!
Schubert's Winterreise might be the ultimate _________________ Best Classical

Daniel Johnston fits that description to a tee.
I would recommend Red House Painters as well, especially Down Colorful Hill for the themes you mentioned (although Rollercoaster is my favorite). Violent Femmes' debut is one that immediately comes to mind, too. _________________

Leonard Cohen, Roger Waters, Ian Curtis, Thom Yorkse - all lyricists who used loneliness and/or isolation as one of their main themes, so I suggest checking them out. _________________ All time

It seems everyone is saying that haha listening to '1990' as I'm typing this.

I can't top Daniel Johnston either. Some things last a long time is the song of unrequited love. For something that tackles loneliness in a more existential and not just a romantic way, i'.d recommend the Charlie Kaufman film Anomalisa (if you have not seen already) Helpfully it is now on Netflix.
