Rank is just dire

Well said. In all fairness the vast majority of live albums are guff anyway when compared to studio versions, but this is the prime example.

There's only one essential live album for me, in so far so it outshines any of their studio material:

Kick Out The Jams by MC5

From a personal point of view, my absolute favourite (partly because I was there):

Royal Albert Hall October 10, 1997 by Spiritualized

And for historical/comedy value:

Dire was perhaps better than the rhyming word I was going to use. ๐Ÿ˜œ

At Filmore East by The Allman Brothers Band. No. 23 in my all time chart

An absolute masterpiece....:

Soul Alive by Solomon Burke

A live concept album about life on the road. None of the songs had ever been released on his solo albums. Tracks were recorded in concert...and in hotel rooms, backstage, and on the tour bus. Maybe the most unique of all live albums:

Running On Empty by Jackson Browne

Torn between Bullet in a Bible by Green Day and Live in the LBC by Avenged Sevenfold, both great live bands and great live albums.

Live At The Apollo by James Brown

Has this been mentioned?

Also another live album I love:

Europe '72 by Grateful Dead[/code]

This is the first album that mesmerised me as a kid. The energy was electric.

Under A Blood Red Sky by U2

I generally prefer studio albums over live ones.

But lately, I like these

Miles Of Aisles by Joni Mitchell

Shadows And Light by Joni Mitchell

The Last Waltz by The Band

My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis in Concert by Miles Davis

11 O'clock Tick Tock on that is amazing. Pity only eight songs too - like a mini live album.
