Elvis, now there is some debate on which compilation is the best, but for my money I'm gonna go with:
Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits by Elvis Presley

Not every band has hits, so best of's, obviously.

Edit: Sorry, I read the title of your post and not the actual question.

This album cut of "Tears Roll Down" is better than the original. Plus, they had some wonderful songs.

Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82-92) by Tears For Fears

Because I like James Brown so much, I need at least 70 tracks worth to make me happy.

Star Time by James Brown

Then there are those bands that didn't quite achieve success in their time, but had a great compendium of their work issued later.

Boom In The Night (Original Studio Recordings 1980-1983) by Bush Tetras

Northern Stories 1978/80 by Manicured Noise

1) I included a number of greatest hits, best of, compilation albums in my best ever chart. Criticism followed, of course, which was expected and fair.

You include compilations for The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Doors, Bowie, Neil Young and The Pixies on your overall chart on this site, you're going to get some shit. That's just how it is. ๐Ÿ˜„ On the other hand, including Legend, which was a hugely popular comp., or one for Queen seems reasonable.

Simon And Garfunkel's Greatest Hits by Simon And Garfunkel

I LOVE (most of) their singles. Yet none of their albums would ever make my overall. I don't think they ever made a GREAT album.

Even better than hot rocks (for me) is the collection of The Stones Singles Collection from the 60s. But I LOVE all their albums from the 60s too. Even the really early stuff.

I didn't know that Rolling Stones Singles collection even existed. I just looked at the tracklist and it's awesome. Maybe better than Hot Rock's..

Since in the 50s and 60s, soul, R&B and blues were singles genres, and the producers/artists for the most part weren't trying to make album statements, compilations are often necessary. Even as Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and P-Funk fought to reverse this mindset, it continued to an extent in the 70s and beyond.

James Brown is a top 3 artist for me, and even though the first Live at the Apollo proved to the music industry that R&B albums were a viable business model, he's still primarily a singles artist, so a comprehensive compilation like this one is essential:

Some other justifiable compilations:

Moanin' In The Moonlight by Howlin' Wolf

The Best Of Muddy Waters by Muddy Waters

The Best Of Solomon Burke by Solomon Burke

Anthology by The Temptations

The Best Of Sam & Dave by Sam & Dave

Greatest Hits 1974โ€“78 by Steve Miller Band

History: America's Greatest Hits by America

They have made a number of records. But does anyone need more than their greatest Hits?

This thread is turning out to be really helpful.

Regretting my earlier comment that the only comp you need is ABBA Gold ๐Ÿซข ๐Ÿคฃ
