everything about this album hits the mark of what Ferry and Co. were going through. The album is a syrupy, thick wall of romantic, sexy, sax solos and shimmery guitars and synths and basslines that sound like snakes slithering along in the mix or like thumping dancing farting or something.
and the lyrics are appropriately sexy and romantic.
And the vocals are the same.
like i said the whole album just coalesces and nothing is out of place and the in tended effect is brought about.
Its a perfect album and is just great.
the title track is INSANELY GREAT.
this style and aesthetic isn't "my thing" as much as Sky-Skating" or "Watch Your Step" or definitely "So Far", but its technically just as great (or greater) at evoking the feelings and sound it wants to.
So yeah its moved up to #16 and its awesome. _________________ -Ryan

Yeah. total Masterpiece. It's totally NOT my thing, but I LOVE it anyways because it's so incredibly executed.
This album is one which has subtly, quietly become one of those albums I'm most fascinated by. I return to it often and come away in a dreamy, happy, inspired mood. Then I come back a month or 2 later, and I come away again all the more impressed.
It's strange, featuring jazzy arrangements, and melodies that sound stunning. Annette manages to tow the line between overly abstract strangeness and the melodic and familiar. Everything here sound familiar yet slightly unique and different. Her voice is incredible, whether doing the airy, adorable voice or the spoken word delivery.
The production is piano-heavy and stunning and complex but in an un-showy way.
And then added to the jazz and singer-songwriter strains which run deep throughout, there are unusual touches with strange sound effects added and really interesting changes in tempo and time. The album never quite lulls you, it keeps you on your toes and paying close attention to the delicate details.
This is STILL the only A. Peacock album I've heard. But I am itching to learn more. She will continue to be someone I return to more and more and this is certainly onme of my fave albums of 1982 and I'm glad I can finally contextualize it a bit more accurately into my general thoughts on the year.
Its a 9/10 easily with potential to go into my higher tier of 9.5/10 classics. and I'm gonna add this high on my 1982 chart. I mean I should have had it top 10 before but I just forgot to update my chart but right now it goes to... #4, just ahead of The Dreaming, and just behind Harvest of Dreams
EDIT: nah I'll put it at 5 just behind The dreaming and ahead of 1999
Paul Bley's album, Improvisie (with Annette Peacock), is one of the masterpieces of Jazz -- though it is quite experimental so it may not be so appealing until one has acclimated enough to it.
and I added the beautiful guitar playing of Love Over Gold to my 1982 chart as well. The production and the vocals get grating a bit for me, but the guitar playing on that and every dire straits album really overcomes the other aspects combioned. Knopfler's style, jittery and emotional and distinctly his own, is so profoundly great.
and with that I'm taking a break/ending this phase of the diary. 1982 is solid, and there's still much to discover. But yeah I'm gonna move onto another year now that I have a solid top 50 for 1982.
so long for now, 1982.
biggest oversights still needing immediatre listenms from me from the year? well, i'll just copy my massive queue! (which I'll save for later no doubt.

Okay, so I have 28 years there. If I just say only gonna consider years with zero albums on chjart right now then I have 11 years to choose from.
Further whittling down, I don't wanna do anything from this decade so far, so that brings me down 8 choices.
And whittling further down, I kinda wanna move a bit away from the Post-Punk dominated early 1980s which I just came out of...wanna a change of scenery. So now down to 1989, 1990, 2004, 2008 or 2009...
These 5 are a tough choice. I mean I was born in 1989, so that would be fun. But I was at the formative age of 15 in 2004 and that would be a nostalgia trip for the ages. And I've always cast unwarrented shade at 1990, 2009 and 2008, so it would be good to educate myself.
I'm gonna look at the top 40 of RYM for these 5 years and see if I can decide or at least narrow it down a bit. one second...
okay, I'm back and damn! 2004 and 2008 aren't really catching my eye.
But 2009 and ESPECIALLY 1989 and 1990 are what I'm hanging up on. 1990 has more interesting singer/songwriter albums. But 1989 has more stone cold all time classics (from the stone roses, pixies, de la soul, the beasties, etc etc)
Okay, While I think about it... I'd love for you to vote which year you think I should delve into. Note: I doesn't have to be any of the years mentioned. If you wanna pick the one you'd choose between '09, '90, and '89 and also tell me what your fave year is and which i need to delve into in your opinion, that would be great!
well I'm leaning 1989 due to Kate Bush and Bob Dylan mostly and due to my birthday. But still open to changing it up. Or...even maybe taking on 2 years like back to back years like 1989-1990 or 80-81 or 83-84 or maybe (but probably not) 08-09. _________________ -Ryan
Good choice Mercury: this was the year I started to work, bought my first CD player and started to buy masses of CDs so definitely a year in which I was into a lot of new music. Have a look into my year chart for recs.
