Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.6/100, a mean average of 77.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

the album marks a significant departure from the band's early glam rock sound (which featured Brian Eno in the early 1970s). Instead, Avalon delivers a lush, velvety, and dreamlike atmosphere. The arrangements perfectly blend Ferry's smooth keyboards, Phil Manzanera’s precise guitar work, and Andy Mackay’s poetic saxophone melodies.

More Than This & Avalon are the memorable tracks and quite rightly so.
However the rest weren't interesting enough to hold my attention fully.
This is background music when friends come round or during games night

The singles from this (Avalon & More Than This) are easily the best tracks on the album and pretty much set the tone for how the whole album is sound and style wise. Predominantly synth heavy with a few tracks sitting in the filler category

Saved your best for last. Steady throughout no really peaks or troughs.

Very enjoyable throughout, although a bit front loaded.

Nice, early 80s album, not as wild as their 70s work, but still instrumentals are decent.

I knew the Avalon Single from the time but had never really been into Ferry's suave delivery. However, I gave this album a listen soon after the For Your Pleasure from 73 (which I was really surprised with and loved) - and it doesn't quite stand up to that, it is however still pleasant and enjoyable. I really enjoyed India

I find this album to be a little bit bare at times and I always struggled to connect with some of the slower songs. With that being said when this record is good it is amazing. The highlights for me are More Than This and the title track both of which are very rich and enjoyable. There are a few other cuts after that which are good but then the rest for me feels like filler. I found myself being quite uninterested and very easily distracted when revisiting this album. It is quite repetitive and is lacking that edge to really get me behind the sound. Overall, this might be one of those records I am very wrong about but I just can't get into the music.

I think it's a sign of growing old that I like this album, which I can't imagine 15, 20 or even 30-year-old me saying.

Awesome final studio album before they disbanded. So glad I saw them live in '83 and again in '01; what a treat.
