Mount Eerie by The Microphones

Cool album. This is better than The Glow Pt. 2 in terms of experimentation, concept, variety, avant-garde sensibilities. Really a fascinating listen. And it's layered enough that I expect to uncover more on future listens. But in terms of the music itself, I prefer The Glow Pt. 2. 3.5/5.

Homogenic by Björk

I love Bjork, saw her live and she was amazing. I've been a fan of her songs since Birthday by The Sugarcubes was one of my favourite songs that year, however after hearing quite a few of her albums none of them ever seem to connect with me, despite always having a couple of excellent songs. Homogenic is the same. Hunter and Joga are the excellent songs here, and I can hear how good the rest of the album but I just don't enjoy it as much as I would like. Although I would never complain about listening to it again and I will keep listening to a lot of her songs from throughout her career. Makes it difficult to rate - quality vs enjoyment - so like most of her albums I give it a 7.5, and place it at 25/38 for 1997.

Baystate I've wanted to hear I Want to See The Bright Lights Tonight for a while.

I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight by Richard & Linda Thompson

Nothing too ambitious here, just great songwriting and execution. The vocals from both are a standout, and this album sounds extremely English. Listened to this while walking in the rain on a Sunday and it worked really well in that context. 4/5.

2. As always, I'm going to pick my personal favorite:

Red House Painters (Rollercoaster) by Red House Painters

So many like this group... I just don't get it. I feel like they are the worst at conveying depressing or longing experiences in both lyric and music. Like literally the worst. They often mix jangle with awful vocals and while the lyrics could be sad, they often feel contrived to me. The closest they came to imo was with Funhouse and Mother. There are sadder Michael Jackson songs (ok maybe an unfair/unrealistic juxtaposition, but just trying to state how phony I find this group)... sorry, not sorry. 70 (oh and I just found out why Sun Kil Moon is ridiculous as well... it's been since 2012 or something like that, but put on a Sun Kil Moon record and thought, good lord... this is what is the best record of the year (top ten or something)... heaven help us... now I understand it actually was an old hat who always would disappoint me.)

Found this review funny (even if the rest of the review was actually pretty good):
Quote:
Rollercoaster is the second album by Red House Painters and marks their most ambitious attempt at population control to date. Apparently disappointed with the impact of the debut - suicide rates remained steady - they decided to go for the jugular and recorded an album clocking in at 76 minutes. The big question is, did Kozelek's grand desire for population control necessitate a loosening of quality control? Well, yes, a bit. - MrMungbean, RYM

Black Unity by Pharoah Sanders

I've been looking forward to checking this out for a while, and goddamn it did not disappoint! I love Karma, but this feels like it's on a whole separate plane. The intricacy, groove, spirit, exploration, and technical ability are all off the charts. One of those holy shit first listens that come few and far between. This might be a contender for my top ten in the future. 4.5/5.

Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu-Tang Clan

I don't have much to say about this album. It is really not my thing so I don't feel qualified to comment on it's positives or negatives, but hey, I didn't dislike it. 7/10 and 28/32 for 1993.

Baystate It's hard to resist a 2 for the price of 1 bargain...plus it sounds rather interesting anyway.

The Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra

At first I was going to give this an 80/3.5 because I felt like it could be a prog bore. But it actually has enough flair, boogie, and a tinge of psychedelia to elevate it to an 85/4.0. It's definitely more a jam band/jazz fusion and therefore I dig.

2. Purplepash, my first listen of 36 chambers was "alright", but some time/interest in rap/more listens brought me to realize how good it is. Just relaying me experiences.

So many good choices there PP... but I'll have to go with this one for now:

Stormcock by Roy Harper

Whoa! This is really beautiful, breathtakingly at times. Lots of ideas are packed into four mammoth, meandering tracks. I guess that's part of what makes it progressive folk. I would rate this even better if some of the lyrics weren't juvenile, such as "The critic rubs his tired arse, scrapes his poor brains, strains and farts" and "He's got no bra-strap for our bras and our sagging tits no longer hold a full house of hearts." 4/5.

To Bring You My Love by PJ Harvey

Took me forever to get to this, which is my bad.

I've always wanted to love PJ Harvey the way most people do but I just can't really seem to connect with her music. It's not like it's bad, I certainly didn't think this album was bad, it was entertaining, but I thought it was just alright. Maybe one day it'll click with me, but it just hasn't yet.

Rated R by Queens Of The Stone Age

Similar to the other two albums of theirs I've heard through this game, it's some nice semi-hard rock. Unfortunately, there's really nothing about this band that excites me though. Very competent and pretty pleasant but I won't be rushing back. 3/5.
