Before listening, I only knew Mr. Brightside well, although I had heard a couple others on the radio over the years. The duality of this album is that it's bright, catchy pop rock that also has angst, malaise, and post-punk influence on its underside. The musicianship and vocals are pretty solid throughout. I noticed Brandon Flowers and Will Toldeo have similar-sounding voices on certain pairings of songs from their groups. The main drawback here is that The Killers' songwriting quality is a bit inconsistent. To pick one example, like many before me, I find the refrain "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" to be irritating and ridiculous. Mr. Brightside is definitely the best song, and the album is front-loaded. My final verdict is that this is a pleasant album, although I'm not wild about it. 3/5.

A wonderful fusion of Khan's vocals and Brook's ambiance + guitar playing. I'm not surprised this was great, because of my knowledge of the artists already and that it was released on Peter Gabriel's record label. Brook plays on another with an Armenian musician that I need to check out next. Glad Khan seemed to get worlwide recognition before his passing, because he's a great vocalist.
Sorry Baystate, seems you've got me to rec you something again. You should definitely check out Quality Control sometime, but let's have you listen to Juno's number 1, Acme.

The best thing going on this album is the percussion. It's really fantastic. I know Swans at times go for that drone kind of thing, but sometimes I found myself underwhelmed by two chords for a few minutes straight (especially during a second listen). It didn't reel me in like some other work by them to let the "drone" sink me into a trance of sorts. Anyway, I found it pleasant enough to want to listen to it a second time, but then didn't really find that second experience great. Also, I'll probably get the stink eye for saying this, but a bit of this reminded me of some early post-punk like U2. 3.5/80.
2. Chief, you're stuck with me picking again as well... hehe, but it looks like the last two were pretty much gold... so this one has to suck hehe - Darc Mind.

What a shame. This duo could have probably made a lot more music, but their label went belly up right before this album was supposed to be released. Thanks to the good people at Anticon for taking it off the shelf in 2006. Sparse and nocturnal instrumentals with complex lyricism and a unique voice will always grab my attention. The MC has a strangely deep and level delivery that would have made him stand out in 1997 when this was supposed to come out.

The little I know of Phish is one song I used to have on a mixtape many years ago that I don't remember the title of but it was about pot, and that they and/or their fans are sometimes the butt of jokes on USA sit-coms and movies. I thoroughly enjoyed this though. Reminded me of a lot of some great '70's music with it's light psychedelic rock elements. This album starts good, gets better, hits it's peak with Dirt and Piper, then has a strong finish from there with a great closer. Just how I like them. Seems like they are a great live band (357 live albums on RYM) and listening to this I think I would love to see them live in a festival setting. It gets an easy 8/10 that could rise on further listens, and 12/35 for 2000.
I'm sure I remember these guys but can't remember a song. Check out Renegade Soundwave.

This group really is the greatest instrumental group of all time. They have an amazing way of transforming/captivating me. Explosions in the Sky don't even come close to me. Anyway, that Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls was my favorite, but really enjoyed the whole thing - 4/85.
2. Purplepash - I have a hard time recing my own stuff. But for now I'd like to hear your thoughts on the roaring baritone guitars matched with passionate vocals from Thrice. Also this is my favorite live record of theirs if interested (which really should be #38 on my 2000s list...)

This album's biggest selling point is also its biggest weakness, although the pros overweight the cons. It's very pensive, space-y and the flow is consistently very similar. That's great when it works, and it does most of the time, but some songs are juuuuust too long to keep me interested all the way through. And the songs are 4-5 minutes long... Strangely enough though, my favourite was the longest track, Sloth Trot. However there are a few notable mood exceptions, like at the beginning of 4th song (Plastic Bag Brain), where I thought that my playlist shuffled to a King Gizzard song for a second lol. Enjoyable, new and competent record overall though. 8/10

I feel like this was one of the better Iron Maiden records I've listened to, as far as my taste goes. I feel like instead of a monotony of shredding and piercing vocals, there were dynamics here they played with more than any other album. Sometimes the vocals weren't piercing or only subtly so. Yeah... idk if it's growing on me or if this is just a better album dynamically speaking. 85/4.
